Home-based smart technology, once considered a luxury or “nice to have” feature, is becoming increasingly common. Advances in technology, especially the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, have changed the way people interact with their homes, whether they are on campus or not.
With more than 45% of all households in the US using smart home devices by 2023, today’s new technologies may soon become standard fixtures in new home construction. Below, 15 members of the Forbes Technology Council predict which smart-home technologies and tech services new homeowners will expect as essential features over the next decade.
1. Remote access automatic systems
Automation systems that can be controlled from anywhere are an up and coming home feature. Developers can start installing in luxury homes, then automatic heating systems, washing machines and dishwashers, as well as sound and lighting systems will become safety features when people live away from home. 2. Integration of alternative energy sources
The ability to remotely control temperature and lighting to optimize energy use is a key feature in modern home construction. 3. AI-Powered indoor environment control
AI-powered intelligent home automation systems can become standard. Our homes understand how our living spaces should be adjusted according to our needs. 4. Intelligent thermostats
Intelligent thermostats will become standard in all new home builds, as cost efficiency becomes increasingly important. Some forms of automation will remain luxuries, but anything that affects the cost of living will become the norm. 5. Monitoring of automatic devices
Automation to monitor the operation of appliances based on energy consumption will become standard in new home construction. For example, if your air conditioner suddenly starts consuming a lot more electricity in normal preset mode, it’s time to call a professional. 7. Video surveillance systems
Currently, video surveillance is very common, future homes will be built with whole-house systems built into the plan. 9. Habitual learning AI-Powered platforms
The next evolutionary step will be in home automation, with AI-powered platforms that act as the “brains” of the home for residents, coordinating and automating all the various smart gadgets. 10. Built-in wireless charging and USB ports
As more outlets that include USB ports are installed and generally in hubs like the kitchen and office, the power outlet becomes a consideration for most USB devices. 11. Centralized home automation
I believe home automation will become a standard item in new homes. Home automation allows homeowners to control their entire home from a single device. This includes controlling lights, appliances, security systems and more. 12. Off-grid power
If California is any indication — and Ukraine — the need for off-grid homes will become the standard for new homes going forward. Solar or geothermal powered home backup batteries combined with smart electricity distribution management are good for the environment and also reduce risk by reducing the ability of countries to target power plants to advance military efforts. – Karl Hung, season group
13. Smart meters

14. Emergency notification systems
I believe that emergency notification systems will become a standard item in new homes within several years. 15. ‘Water freedom’ solutions
Homes of the future will be built to be more “water neutral”. This means that in the next five to ten years, new houses, especially those in the suburbs, will begin to implement solutions for the reuse and recycling of sewage and rainwater and household water.
