Corvette has revealed the 2024 Chevy Corvette E-Ray along with its first ride. It is a popular sports car that is electrified and the first hybrid version of the eighth-generation sports car. 70 years later, the first Corvette debuted at the GM Motorama in New York City.
The flagship sports car comes with a special makeover that was heavily teased and accidentally released last year. However, it was revealed in Manhattan on Tuesday. The first model, known at the time as the EX-122, was a stone’s throw away from its official debut, dressed in Polo white with a red bucket seat interior. In contrast, the E-Ray presents more of a submarine trailer than a weekend cruiser, with a metallic blue exterior and a body shape reminiscent of its namesake Stingray.
This is by design, of course. The E-Ray is slated to usher in a new era for the Corvette, including an all-electric version sometime this year. GM is pushing toward a goal of electric-only sales by 2040, and Chevy is leading the charge, with electric versions of the Silverado, Blazer and Equinox coming soon, and now the Corvette.
Chevy decided to ease its customers into the world with the battery powered E-Ray. Sports car customers are a bit squeamish, placing a premium on heavy exhaust noise and the digestive growl of a V-8 engine. The all-electric Corvette may have created an existential panic like Ford did when it decided to slap its pony logo on the Mustang Mach-E. Chevy sees a particular opportunity in the growing demand for electric vehicles.
“I think now is the time to market,” said Harlan Charles, Corvette’s product marketing manager. “For those who need a sports car with road and track capabilities, this is truly the best solution.” When the E-Ray goes on sale later this year, it will start at $104,2954 for the 1LZ coupe and $111,2954 for the 1LZ convertible model. Both prices include shipping charges. And production takes place at GM’s Bowling Green assembly facility in Kentucky. In addition to the first hybrid engine, the E-Ray is also the first Corvette to get all-wheel drive. Combined with a set of all-season tires, a new wheel design and Brembo Carbon Ceramic brakes, Chevy hopes the E-Ray will be the first Corvette to avoid going into storage during the winter months.
