Cudahy, Calif. (KABC) — More than $25,000 in technology equipment was stolen from a nonprofit youth lab in Cudahy over the New Year’s holiday weekend.

The Cudahy Tech Center, located in the Lugo Park Community Center in Cudahy, happened. The nonprofit Southeast Community Development Corporation was robbed.

“At that point I was not only shocked, but angry,” said Emma Hernandez, the charity’s executive director. “That’s where I’m at right now. I’ve been through whatever stages this has happened. And I’m outraged that someone would choose to do this to our community.”

The charity’s mission is to connect young people across the digital divide from local low-income communities. It offers free classes in science, technology, engineering and math. The community center was broken into, but only items from the lab were stolen.

Hernandez said the burglary happened over a holiday weekend and the security system was tripped when it happened. Most of the stolen equipment is new and purchased last summer. Hernandez believes that because the equipment is heavy, it is a job for more than one person.

“We want our kids to go to college and have the experience that other kids in Silicon Valley or, you know, Orange County or whatever,” Hernandez said. “They have great technology centers. We need them in our community.”

A police report has been filed. Due to the accident, the first day of the lesson has been delayed until further notice. The nonprofit is working through the insurance company to hopefully replace most of the items.

Cudahy Councilwoman Elizabeth Alcantar said the city is working with a nonprofit to raise funds to restore and operate the program.

The non-profit organization also a Facebook fundraiser.
