5 street style trends from New York Fashion Week 2022

Each fashion week, a host of attendees—from fashion editors to influencers, celebrities and more—hit the streets of New York City, putting on their best looks as they go from show to show. Trends are reflected on the runways of various luxury and indie brands, but these tastemakers also show what’s to come. Their clothes are not on the catwalk, but on every corner.

Taking to the NYFW runway this year, there were some undeniable trends, such as see-through thongs (a celeb favorite), chic accessories for going out, puffy bags and more. Guests brought their brightest accessories and didn’t shy away from bright colors either. At fashion week, all the rules tend to be thrown out the window. As Bustle’s senior fashion editor Kelsey Stiegman says, “It’s a place of total creative freedom.

Crash patterns? Everywhere. Sequins and feathers and fringe? Hell yes. Pink plaid embellished with crystals? You bet. There were almost too many looks that deserved a double take, with designers and consumers alike leaning towards maximalism – the bigger the platform or the longer the earrings, the better. It’s officially all out IN.

Keep scrolling to see five of the most prominent street style trends spotted at New York Fashion Week this year.

Visible thong

Dua Lipa, Bella Hadid, and Hailey Bieber all played a role in reviving this controversial early trend, and after all their hard work, it’s finally showing up in street style. At NYFW, select showgoers styled their G-strings with low-cut pants and crop tops.

Glitz during the day

Light-refracting looks used to be reserved for evening events under a disco ball, but this season sees them in broad daylight. NYFW attendees rocked sequins, diamonds, and all things glittery.

Packed bags

As for accessories, the puffy bags were a major player. From JW Anderson’s buzzy bumper bag to quilted styles and logo-studded minis, there was no shortage of bags to boot.

Silver accents

Silver accessories – from jewelry to bags and body chains – were the star of every Manhattan street corner. The fashion elite wore silver and metal mesh belts, necklaces and rings, and more, proving that silver is having its moment.

Elevated sportswear

While there were plenty of glamorous outfits, more than a few showed up in athleisure-inspired looks, complete with classic sweatpants and corduroy basketball shorts. The showrunners proved that football shirts, joggers and tracksuits can be flattened with ease.
