Minneapolis North High School broke ground on the Tech Central addition
Minneapolis North High School is getting a new technology learning center as part of a major construction project that will greatly improve the district’s offerings for students. FOX 9’s Maury Glover has the details on the multi-year, multi-million dollar renovation.
Minneapolis (FOX 9) – At North High School, there is great activity for North Minneapolis.
“This is a big bet on the young people in our city because we know they’re going to be huge successes,” said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.
Minneapolis Public Schools is building a state-of-the-art career and technical education center at North High that will allow students from across the city to gain hands-on experience in engineering, robotics, drones and media arts.
It is the first phase of a multi-year, multi-million dollar renovation of the school that will transform the more than 50-year-old building, including a new entrance and lobby, improved common areas and kitchen and dining areas.
“Every roof tile is coming off the building. Every floor is being touched. Every wall is being rebuilt. Windows are going into almost every room. It’s going to be a building the kids deserve,” North said. High School Assistant Principal Steve White.
Community leaders say it’s a remarkable development for the school, which was threatened with closure a few years ago due to declining enrollment.
“We’re excited as a community. We’re excited about what’s happening here,” said Bishop Richard Howell of the nearby Shiloh Temple.
Because they believe the district is not only investing in the school, but making a commitment to North Minneapolis.
“I think it not only gives hope to the citizens of the community, but it also gives us a little bit of pride that we’re going to a Minneapolis high school on the north side of Minneapolis,” Howell said.
