HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – A strengthening storm will make it’s presence felt in Nebraska tonight, first bringing rain after midnight then transitioning to snow over western areas. Temperatures this evening should stay above freezing in the Tri-Cities for most of the night so precipitation will begin as rain before transitioning to snow Thursday morning. Temperatures will be right at the threshold for snow so for some areas continuing rain could carry over into the morning commute while a county or two to the north and west could be seeing snow.

The dynamics of this storm may be strong enough to overcome surface temperatures to facilitate that conversion. Snow appears to fall in a narrow band extending form the southwest corner of the state through central areas into Northeast Nebraska. The current forecast calls for 1 to 3 inches but there could be some heavy bursts of snow producing heavier end totals within the band.

Winter Weather Advisories will be in effect for potentially low visibility and slicks roads, so check the latest forecasts and allow for extra travel time. Afternoon high temperatures are forecast to climb into the low to mid 30s.

The storm will be fast moving and should exit the state by the evening. The next couple of days will resume with temperatures in the low to mid 30s Friday and Saturday respectively. Another, more impactful storm is expected to impact Nebraska during the overnight hours of New Years Night (Sunday) through Monday and possibly Tuesday. This will be a much stronger storm. The track of this storm is yet to be determined but it could bring more snow, so consider that in your travel plans.
