This weekend’s games
• No. 16 Michigan Tech will play in the Desert Hockey Classic at Mullet Arena in Tempe, Arizona.
• The Huskies open against host Arizona State on Friday at 9 pm Eastern/7 pm Mt.
• The Huskies play at 5:30 p.m. Eastern/3:30 p.m. on the second day of the Mount vs. Air Force or No. 6 Boston University.
• ASU is waiting for the late slot, even though the Desert Hockey Classic is not in the championship game.
• Michigan Tech wins the 2016 Desert Hockey Classic at the Gila River Arena.

CCHA Defender of the Week
• Michigan Tech junior Brett Thorne was named the CCHA Defensive Player of the Year. He earned the honor for the second time this season.
• Thorn earned a spot on the all-tournament team at the Great Lakes Invitational with two points and an assist on all CCHA Blueliners’ goals. Both points came in the Huskies’ win over then-No. 11 Michigan State tied the score at 2-2 with just 1:13 left on the power play in the GLI third-place game. Arvid Kaderot then assisted the overtime winner.
• Thorne is third on the Huskies and fourth among CCHA defensemen with 12 points.

Michigan Tech
• The Huskies are 12-6-3 overall and atop the CCHA standings with a 7-4-3 conference record.
• Tech is 5-2 in non-conference games with wins over Alaska (2), St. Lawrence (2) and Michigan State.
• Ryland Mosley leads the Huskies with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Kyle Kukonen had 14 points and seven assists on seven goals.

• Michigan Tech is ranked No. 16 in this week’s DCU/USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls.
• Tech has been ranked weekly in the polls, and the No. 16 ranking is its highest this season.

Recap
• Michigan Tech hosts the 56th Great Lakes Invitational at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.
• Tech won the GLI third-place game 3-2 in overtime over No. 11 Michigan State.
• Arvid Kaderot scored the game winner in overtime. Brett Thorne tied the game with a power play goal with 1:13 left in the game. David Jankowski also scored.

Coach Shawn
• Head coach Joe Shawhan is in his sixth season behind the bench and has a 107-83-19 record.
• In the year On November 5, 2022, he won his 100th career game at Bowling Green, and is tied for third all-time in wins by a Tech hockey coach.
• Shawhan’s 22 wins in his first season are tied for the most by any first-year Michigan Tech coach. Jim Nahrgang won 22 games in 1982-83.
• Shawhan was named the Huskies’ 22nd head coach on May 30, 2017, after serving as an assistant coach for Tech the past three seasons.

Absence of conference
• Tech will play nine non-conference games this season.
• The Huskies lost to Ferris State on Oct. 7.
• Tech swept Alaska on Oct. 13-14.
• The Black and Gold swept St. Lawrence in their lone home non-conference series on Oct. 28-29.

• Tech returns to CCHA play on Jan. 13-14 against St. Thomas at MacInnes Student Ice Arena. It will be the second meeting with the Tommies since the Huskies swept the series in Minnesota on Nov. 18-19.
• The Black and Gold travel to Ferris State on Jan. 20-21.

CCHA Accused of November
• Brett Thorne was the CCHA Defensive Player of the Month for November.
• Thorne helped Tech to a 5-1-2 month, posting league highs in assists (6) and plus/minus (+6) over six games, while ranking sixth in points per game (1.00) and seventh in blocked shots (11).
• Thorne is an integral part of a Tech defense that ranks fifth in scoring defense (2.0) and eighth in penalty kill percentage (.867).

CCHA Goalkeeper of October
• Blake Pattila was named the CCHA Goaltender of the Month for October.
• For the fourth time in his career, he won the monthly honor and was awarded as the best scorer of the month.
• Pattila led the CCHA goalies in October.

Preparation All-CCHA
• Senior goalkeeper Blake Patilla was named to the preseason All-CCHA team.
• Was a semifinalist for the Mack Richter Award and was named to the All-CCHA second team as a junior.
• Pattila ranked fourth in the CCHA in earned run average (1.99), wins (16), shutouts (5), saves (614), and .911 save percentage in CCHA games last season.

NHL draft picks
• Kyle Kukkonen – Selected by the Anaheim Ducks with the 162nd overall pick in the sixth round of the 2021 NHL Draft.
• Ryan O’Connell – Selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs with the 203rd overall pick in the seventh round of the 2017 NHL Draft.

Captains
• Senior Logan Pietila is the captain along with juniors Arvid Kaderot and Brett Thorne.
• Junior Ryland Mosley is an alternate captain.

Play CCHA
• Michigan Tech was in the CCHA from 1981-84 and holds a 63-51-6 all-time CCHA regular season record.
• The Huskies are 3-6-2 in the CCHA Playoffs with three wins over Ferris State.

Transfers
• Ryan O’Connell played four seasons (2018-22) and 117 college games at Ohio State. He tallied 25 points with two goals and 23 assists for the Buckeyes and was a member of the 2019 Big Ten Regular Season Championship and NCAA Tournament teams.
• Jack Work started his college career with 15 games over the past two seasons with Denver. He collected one assist in his NCAA debut with the Pioneers and was a member of the 2022 NCAA National Championship team. Jobs was named an AHCA Scholar All-America (2020-21) and was on the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team (2021-22).
• David Jankowski played four seasons (2018-22) and 110 games for St. Lawrence. He collected 53 college points with 20 goals and 33 assists and was a team captain in 2021-22. The Saints won the 2021 ECAC Tournament Championship. Jankowski was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team.

CCHA poll in beta
• Tech was ranked fifth in the preseason CCHA coaches poll.
• Minnesota State, Northern Michigan, Bowling Green and Bemidji State were selected ahead of the Huskies.
• Lake Superior State, Ferris State and St. Thomas rounded out the selection.

Returns
• Tech returns 18 players from last season with 13 forwards, four defensemen and a goaltender.
• Fourteen Huskies returnees saw significant ice time last season, with Logan Pietila (23), Brett Thorne (17), Tristan Ashbrook (16), Arvid Kaderot (16), Ryland Mosley (13) being the top returning point-getters.

• Tech has 10 freshmen on its roster, which is the eighth-largest freshman class in the nation.

Pietila Times Four
• Logan and Blake Pietila are twin brothers. Logan is a forward and Blake is a goalkeeper.
• Cousin and next-door neighbor Jade Pietila is a defensive tackle.
• Other Pietila players to play for the Huskies were Phil Pietila (2002-05), Aaron Pietila (2009-13), Chad Pietila (2011-13) and Blake Pietila (2011-15).
• Jimmy Pietila is currently a student assistant for the Huskies.

2021-22 RECAP
• Tech finished with a 21-13-3 overall record and was the No. 2 seed in the CCHA Mason Cup Playoffs, going 16-8-2.
• Tech finished 14th in all polls received during the season.
• Tech received its 14th all-time NCAA Tournament bid and second under head coach Joe Shawhan.
• Seven Huskies signed professional contracts after the season.
• The Huskies finished third in penalty kill percentage and fourth in power play percentage and scoring defense.
