Quarterback William “Pop” Watson received top honors in Massachusetts

Springfield, Mass Virginia Tech quarterback signee William Watson III The state of Massachusetts has been named the Gatorade Player of the Year.

Watson led Springfield Central High School to the Division I state championship game as a senior last season, passing for 2,338 yards and 39 total touchdowns. For his career, Watson threw for 5,169 yards and 62 TDs. Named to the 2023 U.S. Army All-American Bowl roster.


A three-star recruit, the 5-11, 180-pound Watson is listed as the No. 37 quarterback prospect nationally and the No. 8 prospect out of the state of Massachusetts according to 247Sports.

Watson maintains a 3.62 GPA in the classroom. He has also volunteered in the community as the face of Springfield’s ‘Vax The Field’ to help city residents get their Covid-19 vaccinations, as well as coaching the Springfield Youth Soccer Program.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program awards one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states in high school soccer, women’s volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track and field, and one national player of the year award in each sport.
