Detroit – There are more than 1,000 fire hydrants throughout Detroit that are out of service and can put your home or business at risk.

Local 4 obtained access to some city records that are not shared with the public and found that there are 1,300 broken water tanks in the city. As a tip, many are not working because of spoilers. Thieves are copper wires on the hydrants, and they make them to the yards.

“I want my neighborhood to be safe. I want my fire hydrant to work,” Detroit resident Jamel Cromwell said.

Firefighters shared their frustration with Area 4 that 1,300 hydrants are out of commission, meaning water is unavailable when they have to fight fires.
