VMWare has announced that an update to VMWare Fusion will bring Windows 11 support to both Intel-based and Apple Silicon machines.

Although ARM versions of Windows itself aren’t available on Macs with M1 or M2 chips, users can download and run Windows 11 on Apple’s Silicon Macs using VMWare Fusion virtualization software.

The latest update to VMWare Fusion is now available to try out on the company’s website as a free technology preview.

VMWare says it’s looking for user feedback as it “removes metal” in 2022 and prepares for more regular support.

“Here it is,” the company wrote. While it’s early days and things on Apple’s silicon don’t always behave the way they’re used to on Intel, we’re excited to share the work we’ve been doing to prepare for virtualization support for Windows 11. Machines on Fusion for Intel and Apple Silicon Max.

Along with Windows 11 support, Apple’s new technology preview for Silicon Machines includes improved Linux support for Windows 11 on M1, 3D Graphics HW Acceleration and OpenGL 4.3 on Linux VMs, and more.

The company notes that VMWare Fusion is still a work in progress on Apple Silicon Macs and has some limitations to its support. Fusion, for example, does not support VMs running on different architectures. Also, users cannot currently create macOS-based virtual machines, although VMWare is looking into that in the future.
