A Rockford flower shop is closing its doors after 90+ years in business.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – It’s the end of an era.

Broadway Florist opened in 1929 on Broadway in Rockford. It wasn’t until eight years ago that today’s owner moved it to Murray Dr. Now he made the tough decision to close the long-established business in Stateline.

“It was by no means an easy decision,” says owner Michelle Stocker.

A full-service flower shop in Rockford is closing its doors for good, giving its customers a bittersweet announcement on Facebook.

“It’s sad. People have been here for a while. It has long been a staple in our society.

Owner Michelle Stocker said a lack of full-time staff and rising costs were factors in the decision. The store is staffed by at least seven part-time employees.

“When I came to work here, I created an identity of who I am, but the people are missing me. You know, the reaction we get by doing happy things and making people feel good when they leave.

One of those clients is Joan Welsh. She says it’s her go-to place for floral gifts and decorations for weddings and other occasions.

“That’s why I came here today; There are so many beautiful gift items here for people to enjoy the last few days of the Broadway Florist experience and still have for the holidays,” says Welsh.

As a local business owner, Welsh said it’s hard to see another business with a strong reputation leave the stateline.

“Our local businesses are the heart of our community. You know, they support so many other organizations.

Stoker said it was a pleasure working with each of his clients.

“From our perspective, it’s great and it makes us happy to be here for so many important parts of people’s lives,” Stocker said.

Stoker said she will take this time to spend with family.

The shop will be open from 7am to 1pm on the last day. Broadway Florist is running a huge sale on all things home decor this weekend until last day.
