BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – An East Baton Rouge Metro Council member is calling a business after reports of criminal activity.
Sitting on Scotland Avenue near the Blues Highway sits Vince’s Liquor Store, which is busy with customers coming and going, but some say not always the best kind.
“A lot of reports, not just to me but to BRPD about fights, loud music, prostitution or drug dealing,” said Metro Councilwoman Chauna Banks.
Banks is calling a community meeting with the Baton Rouge Police Department and the Bureau of Liquor Control to debate whether or not Vince’s Liquor Store should close its doors.
“I don’t know if the landlord still understands that they are responsible … the owner still understands that they are responsible for these types of behaviors. Banks added that they still need to put some kind of direction on what is allowed and what is not allowed.
Banks explained that many times people go into shops, buy alcohol and then cause trouble on the street. Attempts were made to get Vince’s Liquor Store’s side of the story but no one got back to us.
In the past six months, there have been two shootings near Vince, one of which killed a 17-year-old boy.
“They’re really street walkers, and it’s happening all day and night,” said one business owner who opened their doors to customers on Scotland Avenue. Get out on the field.”
Some business owners believe that closing the liquor store will not solve the problem.
“I don’t think they should close. I don’t think it has anything to do with the shop. I think we need more police officers on the job,” added one business owner.
A community meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 23 at Greater Carmel Baptist Church from 5:30 p.m.
