“Saturday Night Live” kicked off this week’s episode with Heidi Gardner hosting PBS NewsHour, focusing on three prominent Republicans ahead of the midterm elections less than two weeks away.
First was Herschel Walker, played by Kenan Thompson.
“My name is Herschel Walker, Texas Ranger,” said Thompson Walker in the cold open of the NBC variety show. And I’m running for president of United Airlines.
Next: Dr. Mehmet Oz, played by Mikey Day.
“My Pennsylvania Phillies are in the World Series, and I just had a delicious Philadelphia cheese and steak. Oh!” Day Oz Revealed.
Finally: Carrie Lake, played by Cecily Strong.
“It’s great to be with you,” she said. “On your sweet little show full of lies.”
Gardner noted that as a PBS NewsHour host, the three have been doing well in the polls lately, even though they have no political experience.
“And that’s where I don’t know,” Thompson’s Walker said when asked why his support is growing. “The whole world is a mystery, isn’t it? For example, a thermos heats hot things but also cools cold things. My question is… how does he decide?”
It was followed by the question of why so many Georgians supported Walker in the state where he is running for the Senate, despite his many controversies.
“Gas,” he said.
The next question went to Day’s Dr. Oz, the PBS NewsHour host who said he met his rival in the Pennsylvania Senate race, John Fetterman.
“I was a long shot,” says Day’s Dr. Oz. “But I told myself that if you’re honest, you’re fair and your opponent has a debilitating medical emergency, you’ll win this election.
Fetterman had a stroke earlier this year.
Strong’s Lake responded by saying she was a “fighter” in her campaign and has returned “over two thousand salads” in her life.
“And I’m not afraid to do the same with democracy,” she said.
Walker then asked the next question and started talking about Pokemon.
Gardner noted that PBS host Lake has proposed major changes to voting laws in Arizona.
“If the people of Arizona elect me, I will make sure they never have to vote,” Strong’s Lake said.
The episode wrapped with Thompson Walker saying “yipee ki-yay and go Halloween” before the show’s signature line, “Live… from New York! It’s Saturday night! ”
