Fall is approaching, which means it’s time to look for some seasonal fashion inspiration.
In the past years we have seen the comfort of Selena Gomez Just murder in the building threads, Chris Evans famous Knives out Nicole Kidman’s gorgeous sweaters and coats Undoing when we stock our closets for the season. And in 2022, we’re blessed with another perfectly timed on-screen fashionista: Maggie on Everything I know about love.
The seven-episode series, based on Dolly Alderton’s best-selling memoir of the same name, will premiere on the Peacock on August 25 after airing on BBC One in June. Everything I know about love is a romantic coming-of-age drama set in London that follows besties Maggie (Emma Appleton) and Birdy (Bel Powley) as they transition into adulthood. Fresh out of college, the two move into their first apartment with friends Amara (Aliyah Odoffin) and Nell (Marli Siu) and embark on a quest to find love, pursue their dream jobs, and live life their new best.
In addition to touching and intimate looks at friendship, the series features a stellar wardrobe filled with a variety of vintage-looking statement coats worn by Maggie. Her life may be a hot mess throughout the series, but at least she always has stunning outfits to help create the illusion that in addition to being stylish and fun, she’s also absolutely gorgeous.
The second Maggie appears on screen it’s clear she knows her coats. The first episode opens with her running onto a train platform in 2012. She is wearing a short tan suede jacket with fringe hanging down the front, from the sleeves and below the hemline. The fringes blow in the wind, foreshadowing a spontaneous train ride ahead, and the jacket accentuates her gorgeous caramel hair color. Every episode of Everything I know about love has its Maggie Coat moment, but the pilot is definitely her most impressive fashion show.
After her brimmed ensemble, Maggie switches to a classic short black leather jacket for a night out. The next day, trying to look “understated enough” for a date, she wears a black dress and a fluffy marigold coat. Her husband calls her Big Bird, which is correct, but let’s not act like she’s not doing it. When Maggie gets ready for a night on the town, she covers up one of her signature theme numbers with the iconic black fur coat shown above. And her final outfit of the episode is a bedazzled denim jacket with silver gems running across the back, collar and pockets. Its range.
Maggie wears one of her boldest coats to a job interview in Episode 2. It’s long, brown, has a patterned belt that runs down the sleeves and around the waist, and features a light fur collar and trim. She pairs it with a wide-brimmed hat, creating an ensemble that screams Corporate Cochella. Who among us does not need this adjustment immediately? Throughout the seven episodes, Maggie has beige and leopard fur coats, a sharp lapel jacket and a fantastic red pea coat at the end.
Her coat collection is enviable not only because each jacket is a statement maker, but because they perfectly tie together—and in many cases elevate—her overall look. Maggie is a self-described “try hard” who undergoes multiple fantastical wardrobe changes a day, and you just have to respect her.
In a way, Maggie’s coats act as a visual representation of her lively, conflicted and dramatic personality. She’s a brave old soul who isn’t afraid to bring back old fashions, she appreciates originality and desperately wants to look cool. She’s not afraid to put her heart out there, and she believes in passion, luck and romance.
I never expected my fall 2022 fashion to be shaped by a show set in 2012 that celebrates an even earlier era of fashion, but such is the power of Everything I know about lovecostume department. Forget everything Maggie knows about love. I want to know everything she knows about coats.
