Houston – Texas Tech and head football coach Joey McGuire He agreed to a new six-year contract that will increase his annual compensation and keep him as Red Raiders coach until 2028.
Under the six-year, $26.6 million deal, McGuire will receive a $100,000 annual increase in his annual compensation, rising to $4.6 million for the 2028 campaign, which does not include various performance bonuses. The contract is worth about $1 million more per year than McGuire’s original deal and was approved by the Texas Tech University System Board.
Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt said, “With Coach McGuire at the helm of our football program, I firmly believe that our best days are still ahead of us.” “Throughout this football season, it’s been clear that he and his staff are building a culture that will benefit this program for years to come. Coach McGuire will tell you first and foremost that their goal is not to play in a bowl game, but to play. We’ve won championships and I believe we’re on that path under his guidance.”
In just his first season, McGuire led the Red Raiders to one of their most memorable years in recent memory, with wins over both Texas and Oklahoma and a Big 12 win since 2009. Texas Tech (7-5; 5-4) ) closed out the regular season with three straight wins for the first time since 1995 and will face Ole Miss in the TaxAct Texas Bowl from NRG Stadium in Houston after Rob Night.
Off the field, McGuire once again rounded out Texas Tech’s adoring base with a consensus top-25 recruiting class that signed a week ago. The Red Raiders boasted 27 players on the Tax Act Texas Bowl roster who earned their college degrees early, while Texas Tech posted its best semester ever in the class with a 3.13 team GPA.
“I am fortunate to have great administrative support here at Texas Tech with President (Lawrence) Shovanek and the best athletic director in the country in Kirby Hocht,” McGuire said. “We believe our team’s success this season is a benchmark for what is yet to come.
