Avril Lavigne is adding “fashion designer” to her resume.

Last week, the Canadian punk princess dropped her first fashion collection with gothic alt clothing line Killstar.

Designed and handpicked by Lavigne, the electrifying edition features ready-to-wear fashion, accessories and intimates. The “Complicated” singer joined forces with the label to customize items that “really speak to her fan base” and “recapture her pop-rock essence,” according to the brand.

Since her musical debut in 2002, the singer-songwriter’s style has evolved through multiple periods from a skate-rock persona to the realm of pop-punk. This year, the 37-year-old released her seventh studio album, Love Sux, as well as a 20th anniversary edition of her debut album, Let Go.

Yahoo Canada: What does fashion mean to you and how does it play a role in your music career?

Avril Lavigne: “Fashion has always been a way for me to express myself and I do whatever comes naturally to me at that moment. Each album has its own atmosphere and color story that defines that era of my career. With ‘Love Sux’ we are currently in the black and orange era and everything is black and orange!”

YC: How would you describe your personal style and how did that influence the collection with Killstar?

AL: “My style is rock ‘n’ roll. I love slacks and hoodies, skate shoes and combat boots. I think you can really see that in this collection as it’s a bit of everything but complements each other well.”

“I hope everyone wears this [collection] and have fun with it.”

YC: How would you describe your Killstar collection and how do you hope people will wear these items?

AL: “My collection with Killstar reflects the mix of styles I love; there’s an edge to the print, but it’s all done in tighter, sexier silhouettes. I hope everyone can wear this [collection] and have fun with it. You see a lot of skulls and skeletons, which I love.”

YC: What was the design process like? How involved were you in designing the collection?

AL: “I sent the team some of my favorite Killstar pieces and some colors I like. Then I met with the team and the conversations went from there! Going into the process, I knew I wanted my collection to be cool, sexy and edgy. You’ll see that with the rib cage maxi dress.”

“Fashion has always been a way for me to express myself and I do whatever comes naturally to me at that moment.”

YC: What is your favorite item from the Killstar collection and why?

AL: “My favorite is the maxi dress and the underwear…and the tomb travel suitcase! I had it with me on tour last summer with Machine Gun Kelly and every time it came out everyone would stop and ask ‘Where are you. get it that?'”
