Baggage Claim: Delta’s Chief Customer Experience Officer always sells it on business trips


Allison Ausband began her career as a flight attendant at Delta Air Lines in 1985. Over the past 37 years, she has steadily risen through the ranks at the Atlanta-based carrier, serving more than 20,000 Delta flight attendants as senior vice president of flight services, as well as vice president of reservation sales and customer care, serving more than 37 million customers in 10 service centers in four countries. She is in charge of communicating.

Ousband is now chief customer experience officer and CEO at Delta. Needless to say, she is one of the most experienced executives in the travel industry and an expert in preparing for business travel.

Reliable technology

I started my career as a flight attendant at Delta and developed some packing habits that were hard to break. One lesson that has stuck with me throughout this time is reliability – even though I’m not a deep sleeper, I don’t want to delay a flight as a flight attendant. An extra alarm clock was a must for me as a backup to my hotel-room alarm clock and alarm clock. Of course, technology has come a long way since then, so I went from packing my physical alarm clock to making sure I had a power cord. Now, I organize all my chargers and adapters in our Someone Somewhere amenity kit. I have one in every bag. And I never leave home without my iPad.

Minimal packaging style

I’m low key when it comes to most of my travels. It’s another habit that has stuck with me since my flight attendant days. I usually fly business, so I only sell what I need – anything I’m flying wears into the night. No need for extra weight in the bag. And hey, less weight means more fuel savings on the plane. A set of packing cubes is always useful, so I can separate what I need and see everything clearly in my luggage.

Transitional power clothing and sneakers

I truly believe that a good pantsuit can work as a suit of armor, and it’s one of my favorite pieces to style. The key here is that it is transitory. I always wear the same shoes I leave the house in and pack the same clothes. Sneakers are my new best friend with a suit. I definitely get my steps in during my airport visits, and these platform sneakers are usually what you’ll find on me. They’re practical and comfortable, and dressy enough for me to wear to a meeting. Customers and colleagues during the day and then dinner at night.

Breathable workout clothes

I’m sure other road warriors can relate to the struggle of finding time to fit in a workout. I know my own Apple Watch will always remind me to close those pesky rings! So now, Lululemon running shoes are essential when packing for any trip, business or pleasure. It’s the only item I don’t think about. Having comfortable clothes that make me feel good makes it so much easier to complete the workout. And thankfully, before I get to ground-based workouts, I can stretch out on board in one of our Peloton rooms at Delta Studios.

Airplane-friendly skin care
