Prior to his final year at the Lubin School of Business, BBA in Business Analytics student Derek Storr attended Barclays in summer 2022. Lubin credits everything he learned in his classes with landing an internship and a full-time job at the institute after graduation.

Why did you choose Pace University and the Lubin School of Business?

When I was deciding where to go to college, I knew three things: I wanted to move away from home, I wanted to be in a city, and I wanted to go to business school. Fortunately, Pace University checked all my boxes. However, when I applied to Pace, I never visited the campus. It was my first time at Pace and in New York City for an accepted student event in April 2019, where I met professors, students, club representatives, and more, giving me a chance to get to know the university. At that point, it was clear that Pace University was where I wanted to be.

How have on-campus clubs helped enrich your student experience?

Some of my favorite memories at Pace come from the clubs on campus. During my freshman year, I became heavily involved in the American Marketing Association (AMA), one of the many student organizations at the Lubin School of Business. I met an amazing group of people—many of whom I’m still close with—and gained experience on a variety of projects. I carried this passion through my sophomore and junior years, serving as vice president and president, respectively. I always tell people that those positions built my career. I learned a lot about project management, communication, budgeting, and more, which laid the foundation for my future success. In fact, these skills helped me land a peer leadership position, work as a campus tour guide, and eventually land an internship at Barclays.

What was your favorite odds on Pesce?

Being at Pace has allowed me to discover who I am and what I want to do. If you met me in high school and put him next to “me now” I don’t think they would know each other. Pace has a very welcoming environment, which is fueled by being in New York City. You can really be whatever you want to be here, so I’ve spent a lot of time crafting an identity that I’m proud of both professionally and personally.

“PACE is a place with many resources and a wide network to help students reach their goals. Whether it’s getting involved in a club, getting help in class, or starting a whole new business, take advantage of all the resources you have.

Over the summer, you interned at Barclays. How did the Lubin School of Business help you prepare for that internship?

The Lubin School of Business helped me discover all that New York City has to offer. From fun classes to amazing faculty, there’s a wealth of knowledge that has helped me create a path that I can enjoy. In fact, my business analysis lessons came full circle during the summer internship, where I was able to use my Structured Query Language (SQL), Excel, project management and finance skills to navigate the banking space. My education at Lubin gave me real-world skills, which allowed me to thrive during my time at Barclays!

How did your internship influence your career goals?

Interning allowed me to apply my classroom knowledge in the real world. I now have a better understanding of what I want to do with my career. I was fortunate to work for such an amazing company where they spent a lot of time with interns to highlight potential career paths both inside and outside the company. Specifically, I spent a lot of time meeting one-on-one with employees across the organization to hear their stories, daily lives, and general advice. Fortunately, I received a return gift, so I can officially say that my professional career will begin at Barclays when I graduate from Pace University!

Do you have advice for other Lubin students?

Say “yes” to everything! I know the struggle of not knowing what you want to do, or wondering if you are making the right choice, just say “yes”. No matter the experience, even if you absolutely hate it, you will take something away from it that will help you find what you really want to do. For example, I was not interested in joining the AMA e-Board, but they told me I should apply. Fast forward, those experiences helped me find other opportunities and gather technical skills that I use every day.

What does #LubinLife mean to you?

When I hear #LubinLife, I think of welcoming, driven and passionate students who make the most of their time here. There is no shortage of opportunities, and you can always find something to help you get to the next level. Whether in the classroom, club, or practice, Lubin will help you find these opportunities and become an established professional.
