IDA – Rose Patrick and her daughter, Amanda Sharp, specialize in one-of-a-kind creations at Press Rose in Ida.
The duo opened their store, at 2828 Lewis Ave., a little over a year ago. Open only one weekend a month, the date and time of which are posted on Facebook, the exclusive boutique offers art by Patrick and handmade furniture designed by Sharpe, along with a wide selection of homewares and gifts.
“We opened the business last September,” Sharp said. “Before she started the business, my mother was a housewife, but she was always doing very creative and artistic things. We decided it was time to work together and sell some of her creations.”
Patrick’s framed artwork hangs on the walls of the shop. Many of them are artfully arranged in color, drawing the customers’ eyes around the room as they look at the collection of images.
Patrick works in a variety of media but especially enjoys mixing colored pencils. It is her signature hidden in every creation.
“My mother’s art changes from modern to traditional. It’s amazing how you go from one look to the next,” Sharpe said. “She creates really cool stuff. You wouldn’t think a 71-year-old would do some of these prints.”
Some of Patrick’s creations are embellished with different materials, creating a layered piece.
“All her pieces of art are the same,” says Sharp. “When decorating a room, she sometimes adds stones, beads or wood shavings. She also makes random creations like fall floral arrangements. She is very talented in every way.
Sharp said her mother’s hope is not only to inspire, but also to inspire others through her art to develop their own creative side.
Sharp, 41, builds the furniture displayed in the shop. She specializes in woodworking and loves mid-century pieces. Tables with hair legs are available in the shop.
“My saw goes where the saw goes and my mother’s brush goes where it goes. It is difficult to describe us when it comes to creativity. But making furniture is one of my favorite things, like making bookshelves and dining room tables,” Sharp said.
In the back of the store, her workshop is stocked with wood, tools and a DeWalt saw.
“I fix some furniture, but I like to create from scratch,” she said. “Recently, one of my biggest challenges has been trying to find affordable quality wood so that I can continue to create. I prefer to work with new wood.
Patrick and Sharp are the only two employees in the store, but they work with several vendors who display and sell their wares.
“We’re looking to add more vendors, but it has to be the right one,” Sharp said. “If anyone is interested in learning more about becoming a vendor, we would be happy to arrange a personal consultation.”
In the short time the store has been open, Sharp said they have developed a following of repeat customers.
“We want to create an atmosphere where people feel welcome and want to come back,” she says. “We have customers who we know by first name and they are like an extension of our family. It’s very special to us.
“One of the reasons we are open one weekend a month is because we have time to create. My mother only creates at home. When I do woodworking, I only create in the shop, and I do some watercolors and other things at home.
Sharp, who also works in real estate, said future goals include adding a coffee shop so customers can grab a drink while waiting at the boutique. For now, business hours remain one weekend a month, but private shopping tours can be arranged.
