The Chinese government called on Washington on Thursday to lift tech export restrictions after chip designer Nvidia Corp said new production could be delayed and some jobs out of China.
The latest restrictions add to US-Chinese tensions over technology and security. U.S. officials say they must limit the spread of weapons-grade technology.
Nvidia said on Friday that it would need US government approval to export any products equal to or better than its A100 graphics processing chips to China, Hong Kong or Russia. He said buyers of the A100 and development of the new H100 could be affected.

China’s Ministry of Commerce has accused Washington of abusing export controls to limit semiconductor sales to China. He said trade restrictions would disrupt supply chains and global economic recovery.
“China strongly opposes this,” ministry spokesman Xu Juting said. “The US side must immediately stop its wrongful practices, treat companies from all countries, including China, equally, and contribute to the stability of the world economy.”
U.S. officials worry about China’s technological advances as a strategic threat and a challenge to U.S. industrial leadership.
Washington has been tightening controls and partnering with China to ensure it can use the most advanced chips and equipment to manufacture its own. China is spending heavily on developing its startup manufacturers, but it can’t make the high-end chips used in ultra-modern smartphones and other devices.
Nvidia said it may need to “move some operations out of China.” The company said it is asking the US government for its development and support.
He said that he will try to meet the needs of Chinese customers for products that are not subject to licensing requirements. The company may seek approval for customers who need it, but said there is “no guarantee” the U.S. government will agree.
