Community Closet Opening Offers Affordable ‘Fashion’ | News, Sports, Jobs

Marie Edwards and Cheri Lathrop donated items for the opening of the Westfield Community Clothes Closet on September 10th.

A community closet will have its grand opening at Westfield Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 10th at 10am. An ecumenical group of women met recently to organize the project, which will be staffed with volunteers from local churches and the community.

Steering committee members see this effort as a start to addressing the growing needs in the community due to troubled economic times. Marie Edwards, one of the organizers, said the CCC is important because, “It’s an outlet to reuse, recycle and reinvent things instead of just throwing them away. Plus, we believe everyone deserves a little fashion in their lives.”

The closet will be open the first and third Saturday of the month at the Portage Street entrance of Westfield Presbyterian Church from 10 a.m. to noon and the second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 5:30 to at 7:30 p.m.

Donations of clean, gently used clothing (no underwear please), new shoes, boots, hangers, balls and socks will be accepted during the Closet. hours and also on Wednesdays at the Presbyterian Church office from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and every weekday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Methodist Church on Main St in Westfield. Donation receipts are also available.

Community volunteers are also needed who can work two to four hours per month. Interested community members who wish to contribute to this project or who would like more information may leave a name and contact information with the church office at 716-326-2643.
