Delhi: IIM dropout, designer, MBA student among seven arrested for drug smuggling through dark web

Delhi Police’s Crime Branch has arrested seven people, including an IIM dropout, a fashion designer and an MBA student, in three separate operations for suspected drug smuggling with the help of the dark web, police said on Thursday. .

It is learned that the accused used various online calling apps and app-based delivery services for their customers to place orders and receive the shipments.

Sources said that college and school students were also hired by the accused to sell the drug in various institutes, hotels and parties. In 3 different operations, the police seized over 28 blotting papers with lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), 12.6 grams of MDMA (synthetic drug), 84 grams of cured marijuana and 220 grams of hashish.

According to the police, the accused used the dark web to access websites where they would contact drug dealers from Russia and Canada and ask them to supply MDMA and marijuana to India. Police said the drugs were smuggled through courier services from either the porous India-Nepal border or the India-Bangladesh borders.

To attract a customer base, the accused used app-based services to facilitate the distribution of drugs to customers. To avoid arrest, the men used online calling apps and private messaging apps to order and communicate.

SHPK Malhotra, DCP (Crime Branch) said, “Gangs found that they roped in youth as their main consumers. College students are first trapped in drug addiction on their campuses and then lured into selling narcotics to meet their financial demands.”

In the first operation, a 22-year-old MBA student was arrested from Wazirabad Road in Delhi with cured marijuana. His interrogation revealed details of his drug supplier, who was arrested from Chattarpur. Police said he is a BBA graduate.

In the second operation, a 28-year-old IIM dropout was arrested from Kirti Nagar based on a tip-off. The man was arrested with 28 LSD blotting papers and 12.06 g of MDMA. “He announced that he has been selling party drugs for three years. He buys them from a person in Paschim Vihar. The drug supplier was also arrested. We found another person, a designer, involved in the gang and arrested him from Gurgaon,” Malhotra said.

In the last operation, two people were arrested while they were moving on the Burari overpass. The police seized 220 grams of ‘Malana cream’ hashish. The accused had already been arrested under the NDPS Act in April in Himachal Pradesh and were granted bail in May.

“Traders used to go to Malana village and surrounding areas to buy contraband. The penalty in such cases depends on the amount of the seizure. In case of seizure of LSD, strict provisions of the NDPS Act are added and the accused may not easily get bail,” said an officer.
