Singer-songwriter Demi Lovato is recalling their teenage years and experimentation with drug use and admitted that her early drug and alcohol use should have “should have been a major red flag.”
Demi Lovato recalls struggles with drug addiction at age 12 – “Looking for an escape”
According to a report by People, the “Confident” singer, who’s currently promoting their upcoming eighth studio album Holy Fvck, recalled trying drugs for the first time. “I started experimenting for the first time when I was 12, or 13,” Demi told host Alexandra Cooper. “I got into a car accident and they prescribed me opiates. My mom didn’t think she would have to lock up the opiates from her 13-year-old daughter but I was already drinking at that point. I had been bullied and was looking for an escape.”
According to the report, Demi Lovato said their mother then took away the pills and “locked them up” after she saw how many they were consuming. The Disney Channel alum also revealed that she “drank a lot” in their teenage years. They added that their first-time drinking was “alone” and that she stole beer from her stepdad’s refrigerator. Demi said the incident “should have been a major red flag.”
The drinking flowed into heavy drugs, as Lovato remembered being hooked on cocaine towards the end of their teen years. “At 17, it was the first time I tried coke and, like, loved it too much and then kinda bled into me going to treatment right after I turned 18,” she explained. They added that when she finally received help her team was “really supportive” because it had been a “long time coming.”
As per Page Six, in January, Demi Lovato completed another stint in rehab three years after their near-fatal overdose in 2018, which caused them to suffer three strokes and a heart attack. Lovato maintained a “California sober” lifestyle and still drank alcohol and smoked weed in moderation. However, in December 2021, Lovato announced she “no longer supported my ‘California sober’ ways.”
As the report shares, the artist detailed the overdose in their YouTube documentary series, candidly telling fans the grip their addiction had on them, from using meth and heroin to now having to receive injections to prevent from getting high.
