ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – It’s still a rough ride in some parts of downtown Anchorage. Hans Rodvik, a spokesman for Mayor Bronson, said the city hopes to clear all streets downtown, but is having trouble finding contractors to remove the snow.
“It was just a problem with trucking,” Rodwick said. “There’s been a lot of guys that have retired over the years, covid, people going south, whatever the case may be, so we’re trying to find people to help us.”
In the meantime, some ice piles have grown especially large near the edge. Downtown businesses complain that it’s difficult to find on-street parking for their customers.
Hannah Shroff owns a women’s clothing boutique called Weather near 7th and D streets. She said the lack of snow removal kept customers away from busy periods.
“Holiday shopping is supposed to be, people are supposed to be excited to go out,” Shroff said. “And you know, when people drive down the road, they see the snow berm and just keep going.”
He said the city is doing what it can, despite the decision to stop plowing and shoveling snow downtown Wednesday night. Rodwick said the plan is to use those resources to expand larger city streets in what is expected to be another significant storm.
The work will continue Thursday night, when the city expects that many new trucks will be on the road to drive snow. He added that the city is still looking for people to help.
“If anyone has a dump truck, please call our road maintenance guys,” Rodwick said. “We love their help.”
“We hook them up with our contractor that hauls snow downtown and put them to work,” he said.
He said the current plan is to have the downtown cleared on Friday evening.
Those interested in helping with snow plowing efforts can call Road Maintenance at 907-343-8277.
