Evolito, a lightweight axial-flux engine from Tesla, starts to scale the team • TechCrunch


Last year YASA, a British electric motor startup with a revolutionary “axial-flux” motor, was acquired by Mercedes-Benz to develop ultra-high-performance electric motors for the Mercedes AMG.EA electric-only platform.

YASA axial-flux electric motors have already earned a reputation for efficiency, high power density, small size and low weight.

However, the team behind YASA has done something very clever. When Mercedes acquired the automotive rights, they transferred the rights to the aerospace version of the engine. That took a new body, the Evolito, complete with the founders of Yasa to develop an ultra-high-performance, low-weight electric motor that’s been described as the best for future EVs.

Evolito’s lead investors are Waypoint Capital and Oxford Science Enterprises (OSE).

Yasa’s ‘axial-flux’ motors make them one-third the weight of other electric motors, more efficient and 3x higher power density than even Tesla, the company says.

Former Yasa CEO Dr. Chris Harris has now been tipped to lead the way to commercializing Evoliton’s electric flight.

Harris joined YASA in 2012, growing the company from 20 employees to over 300, leading high-growth businesses in the UK, Europe and the US for 15 years. He will step down as CEO of YASA in September 2022, but will remain a non-executive director at the wholly-owned Mercedes-Benz subsidiary. A director of Evolito will be the CEO of Evolito effective immediately upon the company’s spin-off and merger.

Evolito acquired UK battery company Electroflight in July 2022, meaning it can offer aerospace OEM and eVTOL customers fully electric power generation solutions.

In a statement, Harris said: “Electric flight requires extremely high power density, extremely low weight electric power trains. Evolito provides the best powertrain solutions for OEMs using the automotive-proven next-generation axial-flux electric motor technology.
