In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Film critic Taran Adarsh while sharing his views on whether Varun Dhawan had made a right choice by signing up for Bhediya, as the film did not do well at box office, he said, “I would not say good choices or bad choices. When a director like Amar Kaushik, who has a track record of giving films like Stree, Bala which were superhits and the he does Bhediya which again was a out of the box film. The film had good director, a fantastic production house backing it, and a good co-star, everything looking fine on papers and it was a good film as well. However, a week before Bhediya was released, a film titled, Drishyam 2 was released which brought a wave with itself”.

Sharing his perspective about the film, he said, “I had sent a message to the producers of Bhediya asking them to postpone the release of the film for one more week if possible. It was because when a wave arrives, any film that comes along it gets affected. Therefore, if you notice, even in the second weekend Drishyam 2, overpowered Bhediya”.
Giving example in context of Bhediya, he said, “Similar situation occurred with Kashmir Files. The film brought a wave along with it. It was due to this wave of success, that the film that was released along with The Kashmir Files, i.e., Prabhas’s Radhe Shyam and the film that released one week later, which was Akshay Kumar’s Bachchhan Paandey, did not do well. In contrary, the film with which there were comparatively lesser expectations, i.e., The Kashmir Files, earned extremely well at the box office. So, it all boils out to the fact that what kind of content audience would like and what not; the first Friday of the films tells you that”.
“Talking about Bhediya, Varun Dhawan did put in a lot of hard work. I feel he gave his best in that film and even the film was not considered a flop, rather it was an average film. However, when the film does not earn as much as expected, then there is certain kind of disappointment, but then when you compare it with the films that were released later and did not perform that well either, that is when you realise that your film did comparatively better”, Taran added.
Bhediya is a Maddock Films production, directed by Amar Kaushik, produced by Dinesh Vijan and starring Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, Deepak Dobriyal and Abhishek Banerjee among others, released in cinemas in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil in 2D and 3D on 25th November 2022.
