Let’s begin with our top story. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has urged the government to ‘stop’ the “Boycott Bollywood” trend. In a statement, FWICE said that a film involves the labour of not just the film’s director or lead cast, but also involves the hard work of lakhs of people who work on a film set. FWICE further noted that the widespread trend has “raised a major situation of survival of the common workers, technicians and the artistes who are earning their daily bread from this industry.” FWICE also suggested that if someone has any issue with a film’s content, they should write about it to the Central Board of Film Certification instead of vandalising theatres.
Meanwhile, actor Abhay Deol, who is known to speak his mind on various issues concerning the Hindi film industry, has reacted to the controversy surrounding Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film Pathaan. In a recent interview, the actor said that the controversy is not something unimaginable and can happen easily. For the unversed, a few right-wing groups have raised objections to the Pathaan song “Besharam Rang”. They have called for a boycott of the film owing to the colour of the bikini worn by Deepika Padukone in the song. The cancel culture on social media has become a common phenomenon. With trends like these becoming an everyday affair on social media, Abhay Deol feels that we are living in a polarized world.
According to several reports, Shah Rukh Khan‘s Meer Foundation has come forward to help Delhi accident victim Anjali Singh‘s family. A source close to the development has confirmed that the actor’s charity organisation has indeed extended help to the victim’s mother. Meer Foundation’s statement read, “Shah Rukh Khan’s Meer Foundation donates an undisclosed amount to the family of Anjali Singh. Anjali, a 20-year-old, lost her life in a brutal hit-and-run that took place in Delhi’s, Kanjhawala. Anjali was the sole breadwinner of the family consisting of her mother and siblings. The aid by the Meer foundation aims to help the family, especially the mother with her health issues while providing adequate relief to Anjali’s siblings.”
“Moving on. The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) on Friday, 6th January announced longlists in 24 categories for the 2023 edition of the awards. Despite an intensive campaign, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, which featured Alia Bhatt in the lead role, failed to make the cut. However, SS Rajamouli’s RRR has made it to the ‘Film Not in the English Language’ longlist.
The team of Gangubai Kathiawadi had submitted the film in all major categories including Best Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Leading Actress. Bhansali had attended a series of events in London as part of the BAFTA Awards campaign. “
Actor Manoj Bajpayee revealed on Friday, 6th January, that his Twitter account has been hacked. He also requested fans not to engage with any content that is posted from his profile until the issue is resolved. Earlier, the 52-year-old actor had shared beautiful snaps with his family from a vacation. He wrote in the caption, “Cherishing beautiful moments with family & friends.” Fans loved the pictures and stated that they are waiting for the actor’s new releases. Manoj Bajpayee will next be seen in Devashish Makhija’s Joram. The film will have its world premiere at the 2023 edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
Meanwhile, filmmaker Karan Johar broke down the mathematics of creating a financially viable film that does not leave the production house in the red. Karan explained that to be safe on a film, they have to make sure that the money received from the digital rights, music rights and the ‘perceived average theatrical’ should equal the cost of production and publicity. Karan also explained how a hit film could be in the red while a flop film could be perceived as being a hit. Giving the example of his own 2012 film, Student of the Year, Karan said that he went over budget on it, and even though it was seen as a hit, it did not fully recover costs.
“Director and producer Rohit Shetty was recently admitted to a hospital in Hyderabad after he was injured during the filming of his upcoming web series. Rohit’s spokesperson said, “The injury was immediately treated. And he resumed his shooting shortly after the incident.”
The Golmaal director sustained the injury on his hand during the shoot of the Indian Police Force at the Ramoji Film City on the outskirts of the city. Talking about the web series Indian Police Force stars Sidharth Malhotra, Vivek Oberoi and Shilpa Shetty Kundra in the lead roles. Meanwhile, Rohit’s recently directed period comedy film Cirkus, which starred Ranveer Singh in the lead, failed to impress the audience at the box office.”
“Lastly, actor Kangana Ranaut is currently busy directing her upcoming film Emergency, where she will also be seen on screen playing the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. While this is going to be a political film, Kangana recently described it as a ‘musical drama’.
In an earlier statement, Kangana had previously said, “Emergency reflects one of the most important periods in Indian political history which changed the way we view power and that’s why I decided to tell this story.” Emergency also stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry and Milind Soman. Emergency is scheduled to release this year.”
