Fall 2022 Statement Bag Trends: A Guide Approved by Fashion Editors

I would call myself a handbag enthusiast – IMO, the accessory is much more than just something to carry your stuff. And while I can wax poetic about the many merits of wearing the right outfit or standing out from the pack, I have a more pressing PSA for you to consider: fall 2022 is full of statement bag trends that will improve your appearance.

I’m getting ready for the upcoming New York Fashion Week and I’m planning on putting together this season’s perfect bags to elevate every outfit I’ll be wearing. After all, as minimal, practical pieces are starting to seep into my aesthetic—t-shirts, jeans, button-downs, etc.—I need super extra accents in my jewelry and to make them more exciting. In the same boat? Keep scrolling for a sampling of the bags of the moment I can’t wait to get my hands on, including styles that include denim, crystal, metallics and fuzzy textures.

(Disclaimer: All of this said, of course, pragmatism is also important when it comes to the grueling schedule of running between NYFW shows and presenting. My typical day can consist of more than eight shows, previews and events scheduled on the hour every hour from 9am to 10pm.So I’ll probably carry most of my life in a functional tote bag along with my smaller statement bag, with which I refuse to part with.)

Shine

Shiny objects never hurt, and complementing a cozy fall look with a shiny bag is an easy yet rich way to update a neutral look. Nina Ricci and Bottega Veneta were among the designers who chose colorful metallics on the Fall/Winter 2022 runway. I, for one, will save a bright bag for the end of fashion week, when I need a choice to emphasize what it will surely be a final ensemble.

Let’s Get Textural

My current favorite “cushion” bag from Poppy Lissiman is definitely on the list for the busy weeks ahead. As woven accessories continue their reign, choosing an unexpected texture like popcorn, crochet or beads is the perfect refresher. Bright colors and unexpected materials make these pieces vibrant additions to any look.

New moon

The undeniable shape of the It bag for fall is the curved crescent. A welcome update to the shoulder bag, this spherical silhouette comes in all forms from logo-covered leather to classic matte leather. This bag will definitely be layered with my important fashion week outfit.

Fur Your Own Good

One of my favorite things about fall is all the textures and tones that come with cozy weather clothing—it doesn’t have to be limited to knits and coats. Cut outs and fuzzy pieces are coming to both shoes and bags this season, I expect to see all of the above.

Great jeans

Denim is a mainstay in my wardrobe. But lately I’ve been adding denim accessories to recreate my current (and forever) obsession: the Canadian tuxedo. During fashion week, I always end up with a lot of denim looks without comfort, so a bag will definitely add an element of purpose to the mix. So many designers have released their classics in a blue-jean version, including Gucci’s Jackie bag and Balenciaga’s Le Cagole bag.

All that Shines

Embellished pieces and going out is a post-pandemic staple and, as a maximalist, I’m totally here for it. Currently, I think there is nothing cuter than a white t-shirt, vintage denim, vintage sneakers and a dazzlingly crystallized night bag. Brands like Cult Gaia, Kara, and Benedetta Bruzziches have perfected the party bag, and at least one of them will definitely accent my after-hours NYFW wardrobe.
