Family New DNA Technology

Miramar, Fla. – The family of Yvonne McCalla has been praying for justice after police officers found her dead in her Miramar apartment on June 14, 2004.

McCalla moved from Jamaica to South Florida when she was a teenager. When she died at the age of 37, she was raising a 12-year-old daughter with her ex-husband and working as a medical assistant.

McCalla’s sister, Olive Smith, said recently: “It was beyond our imagination to think that someone would do that.” “Who will do it?”

After 18 years, the McCalla family hopes new DNA technology will help investigators solve the cold case. Miramar detective Mark Morty recently gave them hope. Crime scene lab technicians are testing evidence.

“The forensic side always gives us a piece of the puzzle that we need,” Moretti said.

McCalla’s older sisters, Smith and Beverly Woolery, said the accident was unexpected. Yvonne McCalla did not answer her phone after attending a service at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, where she was a regular.

Woolery said her niece called her to report that she couldn’t get hold of her mother.

“I had a bad feeling in my heart that something was wrong,” Woolery said of recounting the story in 2013.

Smith and their brother, Basil McCalla, decided to drive to her apartment at 8550 Sherman Sr. N.

Woolery said they found the door to McClan’s fifth-floor apartment open and Basil McCalla was in tears, unable to tell her on the phone that his sister had been the victim of a brutal murder.

There were no signs of forced entry. Investigators believe the killer had a violent temper and went into an “overdose.” Yvonne McCalla’s body was on the floor of the apartment’s master bedroom.

Woolery’s appeal continues years later.

I hope someone knows something and is willing to come forward.

Detectives and the McCalla family are asking anyone with information about the case to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 or the Miramar Police Department at 954-602-4000.
