Final thoughts and predictions – Boston College @ Virginia Tech

Tonight, the Virginia Tech Hokies host. Boston College Eagles Blacksburg 8:00 p.m. Both teams are coming off disappointing losses and looking to beat a loser, only one can win.

Boston College got a big reality check when it squared off against Rutgers on Saturday. Despite being over-the-TD favorites, BC managed just 21 points in a dismal performance that saw Phil Jurkovec and Pat Garo hit the ground running and the Rutgers running game pick apart BC’s defensive line in the 4th quarter.

Expectations for Virginia Tech weren’t quite as high this season, but they suffered a similar fate when they lost to Old Dominion, a team that had one winning record since joining the FBS in 2014. A questionable in-game decision on the part of the coaching staff and a poor performance late in the game when it mattered most. Sound familiar, BC fans?

What should be seen

  • BC’s offensive line. Uh, anyone who watched them play against Rutgers knows they’re not a quality OL right now. So, unfortunately, you’ll have to watch them to find out how good the game will be for Boston College. Don’t set your expectations high just for week-to-week improvement.
  • Phil Jurkovec. It seems like a given that they want to see the QB, but if the team starts to improve from a down week 1, there are some serious issues to work on. Hopefully he was just opening day rusty or surprised by how poorly his OL is playing. But he often throws to his first read or misses tight ends on deep passes. It’s also important to see if he can get the ball out quickly behind such an OL threat.
  • Virginia Tech RB Keshawn King. Boston College’s pass defense should remain strong, but the run defense is inconsistent. King was a bright spot for Virginia Tech’s offense last week, collecting 111 rushing yards, 22 receiving yards and a TD. If he leaves early, it could be a long night for the Eagles in Blacksburg.

Tailgate treatment of the week

It’s 8pm on a Saturday night and you’re watching a disappointing Boston College football team. This is already too hard for you. Let’s take the pain away with a refreshing, crisp and easy-drinking beer to offset the stress this game can give you. That’s my advice. Green State Lager From Zero Gravity Craft Brewery in Burlington, VT. A terrific craft pilsner that goes down easy, perfect if you want the buzz to keep the night going or to have a couple to enjoy before bed.

Prediction: Virginia Tech 20 Boston College 17

I want BC to win as much as anyone, but I don’t see it in the cards. Virginia Tech has a good pass rush, BC has a bad OL. Virginia Tech has a good RB, BC has an inconsistent run defense. The forecast calls for rain, which could lead to trench warfare not at all Go to BC Road. On top of all this? It’s a night game at Lane Stadium, a very difficult atmosphere to play in. Virginia Tech is a dumb team, no doubt, but Boston College matches up pretty well. Give me hockey.
