Harry Styles is the global cover star on Rolling Stone for their September, October issue. In a recent interview, singer-actor Harry Styles discussed his new role in gay drama My Policeman and also responded to accusations of queerbaiting and more such issues.

Harry Styles said that playing queer in the Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming gay drama, where he plays a gay policeman, has been a part of his journey to figuring out his sexuality, but didn’t go so far as to talk about what that sexuality is. “It’s obviously pretty unfathomable now to think, ‘Oh, you couldn’t be gay. That was illegal,’” he said in an interview with Rolling Stone.
“I think everyone, including myself, has their own journey with figuring out sexuality and getting more comfortable with it. It’s not like ‘This is a gay story about these guys being gay.’ It’s about love and about wasted time to me.” Styles also shared his opinion on the state of gay sex in film. “So much of gay sex in film is two guys going at it, and it kind of removes the tenderness from it,” he said.
“There will be, I would imagine, some people who watch it who were very much alive during this time when it was illegal to be gay, and [director Michael Grandage wanted to show that it’s tender and loving and sensitive.” Addressing the accusations of queerbaiting, Styles admitted that he has never “publically” dated anyone male or female and that he is often photographed with people against his will.
“Sometimes people say, ‘You’ve only publicly been with women,’ and I don’t think I’ve publicly been with anyone,” he said. “If someone takes a picture of you with someone, it doesn’t mean you’re choosing to have a public relationship or something.” Styles often been photographed together with Olivia Wilde countless times and spotted at events together ever since he acted in her upcoming film Don’t Worry Darling.
My Policeman is the film adaptation of Bethan Roberts’ queer romance novel of the same name. Styles portrays the younger version of policeman Tom in the queer romance story which centers on a love triangle between three good friends – two men and a woman. Tom sparks a relationship with a handsome museum curator (Dawson’s Patrick), while also feeling the societal pressures of 1950s Britain to settle down with a woman, here a schoolteacher Marion (Emma Corrin).
My Policeman premieres at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival on October 21, and will stream on Amazon Prime Video November 4 onwards.
