Heavy Snow Causes Closures; Distrupts Travel In U.P.

A burst of heavy snow that started around 6:00 this morning has caused a number of cancellations as road conditions have deteriorated throughout the Upper Peninsula.

In Escanaba, the Delta County Airport announced that it has closed because conditions are too severe for aircraft to either take off or land. The airport suggests that people planning to fly later today check with Delta Airlines on their flight’s status, as conditions are expected to improve.

The Dickinson County Courthouse in Iron Mountain is closing at 12:00 noon, and the Dickinson County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event scheduleds for tonight has been cancelled.

In Manistique, the Schoolcraft County Courthouse closed early, at 10:30 a.m., and the Probate Court will be closing once the docket for the day has been finished.

Northern Michigan University cancelled classes for the day. A decision on evening classes is expected to be made by 3:00 p.m. The basketball games against Grand Valley State at the Berry Events Center are still on as scheduled.

Bay College closed its Escanaba and Iron Mountain campuses today.

In Marquette, the Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum is closed.

Police agencies around the U.P. are reporting snow-covered and slippery conditions. The Escanaba Public Safety Department said at about 10:45 this morning: “road conditions are very hazardous. Visibility is limited. Avoid any travel today”.

In Marquette County, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7:00 Friday morning. The National Weather Service says that additional accumulations of 4 to 13 inches is expected, with the heaviest in the Huron Mountains and in the higher terrain southwest, west and northwest of Marquette. The heavy snow will continue to spread north across Marquette County this afternoon. Snowfall rates of at least 1 inch per hour will likely occur over through mid afternoon.

In Delta, Menominee, Schoolcraft, Alger, and Dickinson Counties, the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1:00 Friday morning. An additional 4 to 6 inches of snow is expected throughout the day, along with areas of blowing snow.

The Bark River-Harris vs Rapid River boys basketball game scheduled for tonight has been postponed until Friday night at 6:00 in Bark River. The game will be broadcast on Eagle 107.3 FM.

The Manistique vs Iron Mountain boys basketball game scheduled for tonight has been postponed, with no make-up date set yet.
