Houston ranks first in Texas, according to a new report

Houston has emerged as #1 in the Lone Star State for tech jobs, especially since Elon Musk moved there.

A new report from Dice, an online platform for tech professionals, shows Houston No. 5 among major U.S. cities to increase tech job postings from the first half of 2021 to the first half of 2022.

Houston, says the Dice report, saw an 83 percent increase — the highest in Texas.

Elsewhere in Texas, San Antonio, No. 6 among major U.S. cities (and No. 2 in Texas), saw an 80 percent increase. Dallas appeared on the list at number 15, posting a 58 percent increase in tech jobs. Surprisingly, Austin didn’t make the top 25 in this category.

Overall, Orlando, Florida leads the way for tech job postings with a 111 percent increase.

This news doesn’t come as much of a surprise to Houston. In March, CultureMap reported that Houston landed at No. 2 on Blind’s list of the best-paying Texas cities for software engineers. The average annual salary here is $111,625 and the average annual compensation is $137,987.

“Long before Austin was a magnet for jobs, so was Houston. Long a hub for the aerospace, defense and energy industries, Space City has long been a hot spot to work in technology, Blind said.

As of October 2021, CultureMap and sister site InnovationMap reported that employers in the Houston area posted 14,714 openings for tech jobs in the third quarter of 2021, a 44 percent increase over the same period last year. In the first nine months of 2021, Houston-area employers have listed nearly 39,000 tech positions.
