Queen Elizabeth II’s influence has never been more widespread than on Thursday, when her death shocked the world. Not just in the United Kingdom, or in the arena of politics, the Queen’s death affected aspects of life around the world. News stations stopped programming, TV shows halted production and football games were canceled, and that’s just the beginning. The death of the Queen and the operation “London Bridge”, which came into effect immediately after the news, will affect various events for the next few days, especially those in the field of fashion. With London Fashion Week fast approaching, the British Fashion Council has sprung into action, trying to find a way to honor the late monarch without completely shutting down the entire operation. Here, we’re keeping track of what’s been cancelled, postponed and what’s still about this season’s LFW.
The British Fashion Council suggested canceling “non-essential” events.
Following the Queen’s death on Thursday, the BFC released a statement regarding Fashion Week, which starts in London on September 16. “London Fashion Week is a business-to-business event and an important moment for designers to showcase their collections at a specific moment in the fashion calendar, we recognize the work that goes into this moment,” they wrote. Because of this, the shows and presentations of the collections will take place as planned, although the Council requested “that designers respect the mood of the nation and the period of national mourning by taking into account the timing of the publication of their image” and wait until after 10 traditional -day period of mourning. Any performances scheduled for the day of the funeral – expected to take place on the 18th or 19th – will be rescheduled.
But while shows can go ahead, the BFC recommended postponing or canceling any “non-essential” events such as parties or openings out of respect for the Queen.
According to Fashion Businessthe statement also suggested that retailers close immediately for 24 hours after the Queen’s death, as well as on the day of the funeral, and asked employees to wear black wristbands to honor the late monarch.
Raf Simons and Burberry canceled their shows.
So far, two major shows scheduled for next week have been cancelled. Raf Simon’s team released a statement Thursday saying they plan to “rest during this time of great sadness.” It is currently unclear whether his show, which was scheduled to take place on the 16th, will be rescheduled.
Burberry has also announced their Spring/Summer 2023 show, originally scheduled for the 17th, will no longer take place. The brand confirmed the news Drapersbut still has not announced any plans for a new date.
Other brands are also changing their plans.
According to DrapersFrench brand Claudie Pierlot has moved its spring/summer 2023 presentation from its original date of September 16 to September 28.
