Extensions allow organizations and companies to route calls to different departments within the company. So, if you want to call the HR department of some company directly, you can dial the phone number and add an extension to route the number directly to the HR department.
You will be prompted by the phone number when to enter the extension number. Once you do that you should be good to go, but let me walk you through a few simple steps on how to enter extension numbers on your smartphone.
How to dial an extension number?
You can easily call an extension on your smartphone by following these few simple steps.
- Open the Phone app on your smartphone and dial the desired phone number on the dial pad.
- If you know the extension and don’t want the autodialer to take you around the menu, you can pause and add the extension number directly to save time.
You can also long press the ‘star’ button on the bottom left of the dial pad. This adds a comma or a pause to your phone number. Once the pause function is played correctly, you can make the extension and the call will be transferred directly to the special room.
- When you dial the intended phone number and after playing through the entire menu, you can call the extension by pressing the ‘hash #’ key on your keypad to add ‘hold’. After adding ‘Hold’ you can add your extension and the call will automatically be transferred to the desired caller.
- After adding the protection or pausing the functionality, you can easily add your extension.
- If you want to save the number as an extension, you can do that and from the next time, you will be able to call directly to the person who already has the extensions in place.
This is basically how you use extension numbers to make calls within the company. For example, if my wife calls me on the office landline, she can dial the office phone and add the 399 extension to the end of the call, and the phone will automatically be switched to my office phone.
This is a very useful function in companies, but now we all have our smartphones with us, it seems that we don’t need extensions all the time and anymore, but that’s not the case.
