Hygraph API helps developers integrate content from multiple sources • TechCrunch


In the early days of content management systems, you had to create and store content, typically for a website, and nothing more. Over time, as more output options emerged beyond the web, headless content management systems evolved to easily generate content from a single source for multiple formats.

German startup HyGraph has taken that idea a step further, announcing an API today that will allow developers to pull content from a variety of sources and create content in multiple formats or even content-centric apps. Michael Lukaszczyk, CEO and co-founder of HighGraph, whose company was formerly known as GraphCMS, calls this approach a federated content platform.

“The federated content platform is not only front-end agnostic but also back-end agnostic,” he said.

He believes that this approach will completely change the concept of CMS. “The headless CMS allowed a one-to-many relationship between the CMS platform and the destinations. We’re changing things with many-to-many communication. [Our solution lets you take advantage] From all your content sources, all your investments in enterprise technology, we bring them together in one universal content API, allowing you to distribute the content in the most convenient way to any channel. .

The system is based on the GraphQL API, which carries the company’s original name. As an example, he said, the content could come from an e-commerce system, a CRM, or pretty much any system you can access via an API. The content is pushed through the GraphQL API and the developer can specify any output such as mobile, watch or laptop.

“You can connect all those systems at the API layer with our federation mechanism. And developers and applications need to use just one universal GraphQL API that serves content and data from all third-party systems,” Lukaszczyk explained.

The Berlin-based startup launched in 2017 and has raised about $14 million, according to Crunchbase data. The company currently has 65 employees and looking to build a diverse organization, there are many different ways to diversify.

“First, we’re looking at gender differences. So our people leader is a woman and we are building an HR team to attract more female talent. We are looking to fill some leadership roles with more female candidates,” he said. Furthermore, the company considers cultural and age differences and other factors when building an international workforce.

With the new product, the startup will charge a fee based on the number of data sources developers plug into the API. The Content Federation API was released in soft beta earlier this summer and is generally available starting today.
