I tried on the boldest 2022 fashion trends, from cargo pants to retro sunglasses

The fluidity of fashion is what makes it fun – and keeps us on our toes. However, because trends come in waves, it can be difficult to decide which ones are worth investing in and which ones to ignore. Personally, I’ve always stuck to the basics. If you were to take a look at my wardrobe, you’d be surprised how many different variations of the same button down, tee, and vintage jeans I’ve stuffed into my very small closet in NYC. These staple outfits feel easy to wear and are guaranteed to look good together; that way I never have to worry about not having an outfit. But as I walk the streets of New York City or read my daily feed on Instagram, I always find myself envious of the more adventurous women who flaunt the fashion trends that will dominate in 2022—sheer dresses and pants, for example. loads have been all over the city. street style scene lately.

As I have begun to focus on what is buzzing among those in the know, I have discovered that there is a disconnect between what I they want wear and what I’m actually wearing. For example, I end my nights scrolling through my favorite retail sites (we all have different guilty pleasures!) and curating a cart full of trendy, sometimes over-the-top, clothing. Then, just as I pull out my credit card to click buy, I abandon my mission because I just can’t imagine wearing the pieces IRL. To scratch that shopping itch, I’ll then turn to my visited sites and add another button to my wardrobe and think: Maybe putting it in stripes will improve things?

But lately, the 2022 fashion trends have been tempting me more than ever before – all the see-through clothing, quirky shoes and retro-inspired accessories are just calling my name. So I decided to take on a challenge: wear loud pieces in public, one item a day for a week, and see what happens when I step outside my comfort zone. Join me on my journey forward!

Day One: Retro Sunglasses

After being out of town for a week, I made plans with my 22-year-old sister and her best friend to have drinks and dinner – we certainly had a lot to catch up on. I decided this meal would be the perfect opportunity to start my challenge since Gen Z girls are probably the least likely people to judge me for wearing retro, alien-like sunglasses.

Trying on my shades from Lexxola, I felt the only way to wear them in public would be to channel my style icon Hailey Bieber; she’s been known to rock a sleek pair when out and about in NYC. I decided to copy her formula with an oversized blazer and neutral shades so my glasses would have enough chance to shine. But as I slipped into my black Zara jacket and Mango tube dress, I started to get nervous. I thought “that’s not me” and my stomach was in knots (probably dramatic, but this scene felt like I was sinking to the bottom.)

My solution? I stood up for the girls to get some much needed support and they told me that I HAD to make a sleek bun to get the full street style look. I agreed. They walked me through how to do it (the key is lots and lots of hair gel) and I was ready for my photo op. Thankfully, I had the shades on to make me feel a little less bare, as they shielded my eyes and drew attention away from unfamiliar hairstyles. I looked in the mirror and thought, “Who is that?” But at the same time, I felt I would make Mrs. Bieber very proud.

My takeaway: If you’re trying something new, go into it by channeling someone whose style you admire (for me, of course, that was Hailey Bieber). Even if you’re not someone who usually dresses like that celebrity or influencer, tell yourself you’re going to try your own version of their look. That way, if it doesn’t feel comfortable to you, it isn’t YOUR style – it’s theirs.

Day Two: Cargo Pants

Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, and Kendall Jenner have all been wearing cargo pants recently, making them one of the hottest pants styles for 2022. However, the garment has gotten a bad rap, as it’s usually associated with putting function over fashion. But recently, pocketed pants have become a celeb staple and, IMO, they’re a playful and quirky way to spice up your bottoms collection. Honestly, this style felt less intimidating to me since Reformation had a pair that felt like the balance between full cargos and jeans – so thanks, Ref!

As I ran for my afternoon caffeine fix, I grabbed my new pair of cargo jeans and styled them as I would for a normal afternoon in the neighborhood. On top, I wore a baby graphic tee (it’s actually from Reformation’s collaboration with Suki Waterhouse) that showed just a bit of my stomach as the pants were long. Next, I continued the edgy feel by completing the look with my Classic White Old Skool Vans.

My take: Ease into trend-driven clothing by finding options that don’t feel also away from your normal. If you’re looking to style cargo pants for the first time, try a pair of jeans (like mine) or a pair of dressy pants to help you get the look without making too much of a commitment.

Day Three: See-through trousers

When I saw Kate Moss’s iconic ’90s metallic dress, I was instantly obsessed with the obvious trend. What I love about sheer clothing is that it exudes great confidence. But as much as I admire when others women wear sheer pieces, I always felt like they were too much for me to try. Of course, this hesitation is what prompted me to commit to this challenge.

I decided to go with a sheer skirt as I was inspired by fashion editor Laura Reilly who wore a bright orange open skirt with a simple top on holiday. Her outfit was so good and relatively easy to recreate – so I decided to copy it for happy hour by the beach when I headed East to the Hamptons for a weekend with my family. Before I left, I mustered up all my courage and reached for my transparent mesh midi skirt from Frankies Bikinis (which has a super cute logo on the back). Underneath the statement piece, I wore a simple black thong from CUUP that gave me some coverage thanks to the midi silhouette. To finish off the look, I went with my black Aritiza top, mou platform flip flops and carried my bright Frasier Sterling bag over my shoulder.

Did I feel naked (and any light breeze)? Absolutely. Was my father unhappy with me leaving the house like this? You bet. (I did it in the name of journalism anyway!) But I was surprised at how safe I actually felt once I walked through the front door. “I really do,” I thought.

My take: Sometimes all you need is an inspo photo. Search your favorite Instagram influencer’s feed or a dreamy Pinterest board for ideas. Once you’ve decided what vibe you’re going for, use the photo as a guide – but don’t forget to add your own personal touches if you can.

Day Four: Nallane

For the fourth and final day of my styling challenge, I went for chunky clogs – you’ll find similar pairs in the wardrobes of Kendall Jenner, Dakota Johnson and Katie Holmes. What makes these “ugly” shoes so popular with celebrities? I think it’s because they’re easy to slip on, but feel elevated compared to a pair of plain sandals or slides. And while I usually stick to leather slides with a criss-cross vamp or my Birkenstocks, I loved my chunky new mules from Reike Nen, a South Korean brand that sells custom-made shoes, right off the bat. I felt that the neutral tan color would suit my relatively minimalist wardrobe while still exuding a quirky and cool aesthetic.

When choosing the rest of my outfit, I considered the activity at hand – which in this case was going to the farm stand to pick up fresh fruit and vegetables for the week. (I’m not sure that correct logic, but when I saw these shoes I thought “these are farm appropriate.”) To create the look, I kept things casual with Paige high-waisted denim shorts and a semi-sheer Zara crochet top with a CUUP bra underneath. . Really, the shoes were the easiest part – I just slipped them on and off I went.

My takeaway: Choose your shoes according to the occasion, even if it’s something small. For me, I had to imagine my new shoes in a place (farm) in order to decide how best to style them. By placing them within one atmospherethen I could curate the rest of the outfit to match the mood of the going out.
