Indiana women’s soccer tied Virginia Tech 0-0.

For the second straight game, Indiana women’s soccer played to a 0-0 tie to open the 2022 season. After tying West Virginia University on Thursday, Indiana was shutout against Virginia Tech University 90 minutes later on Sunday.

Indiana was outshot 19-5 and had just two shots on goal. However, the Hokies relied on sophomore goaltender Jamie Gerstenberg to save eight shots on net, a tall order for the German guard. Gerstenberg is now tied with former player Shawna Daugherty for sixth in Indiana program history with 11 shutouts. In 18 career starts in net for the Cream and Crimson, Gerstenberg has conceded multiple goals just once.

Indiana is now on a six-game hitting streak dating back to last season.

One of Indiana’s best saves came in the tenth minute when sophomore defender Camille Hamm’s header went over the net.

Indiana’s only good free kick came in the 47th minute when freshman defender Jaylin Pallas hit a shot from just outside the box.

Virginia Tech had the better chances early in the half when sophomore defenseman Aino Vuorin lifted a shot into the bottom corner, but Gerstenberg called it wide.

Virginia Tech freshman Taylor Price had her best chance of the game five minutes into the second half when she was behind the Indiana back line but fired her shot over Gerstenberg.

The Hokies put as many shots on goal as they could in the final fifteen minutes, with the best coming from freshman forward Torey Powell. Late in the game, her shot was punched aside by Gerstenberg. Powell had a game-high six shots and three shots on goal.

This season, Indiana’s core will be young, and this showed again on Sunday. Freshman midfielder Olivia Rush made her first start of the season and redshirt freshman midfielder Ava Akel made her career debut. Including Gerstenberg, 20 Hoosiers played Sunday, three more than the opening game three nights ago.

Indiana returns to Bloomington for the home opener on Thursday at 8pm at Bill Armstrong Stadium as they host in-state foe Ball State University. The match will be broadcast live on B1G+.
