Karkhana.io, an on-demand B2B manufacturing platform, is solving strategic issues in B2B manufacturing and bringing speed with an intuitive digital on-demand manufacturing platform.

Tech Panda We spoke to Sonam Motwani, Founder and CEO of Karkhana.io, about how they are looking to digitize India’s manufacturing industry.

Digitization is hampered by a lack of technical infrastructure and skilled resources on most manufacturing shop floors. Enabling the vendors to go digital through the karkhana.io platform opens up huge business potential.

“Digitization is lacking in most manufacturing shop floors due to lack of technical infrastructure and skilled resources. Enabling suppliers to go digital with the karkhana.io platform opens up huge business potential,” she said.

For one, suppliers will find demand from multiple industries and geographies that match their competencies, better capacity utilization, and business risk.

“Our proprietary tools help them manage all order activities in one place: specifications, quality and commercial documents, project updates, billing and logistics,” she says.

At the customer end, to make procurement easier and faster for OEMs, the company is taking a fully layered approach.

“Our digital platform exposes specific manufacturing capabilities and associated capabilities to every supplier in our ecosystem. By plugging into the platform, OEMs gain unlimited capabilities for any manufacturing process, giving them the advantage to scale their production to any size in real time,” she explained.

What do they do?

The platform facilitates the organization of design files, product specifications, quotations, inspection reports and live order tracking with photos at every stage. No need for daily phone calls or emails to suppliers to check the status.

Also, the on-stage performance is supported by the reliability of a professional team that takes responsibility for the end-to-end delivery of the client’s project from raw material to delivery.

By plugging the platform, the customer (OEM) gets unlimited possibilities for any manufacturing process. This gives them the advantage to increase their production to any size instantly

Karkhana.io has built a digital platform to produce custom-made parts. Customers are in front of the product platform. Through the platform, you can upload all the project details and files, create an RFQ and track the project status.

“At the back end, our engineers receive the information. They provide the quote and then they source the product from the suppliers,” says Motwani.

A one-stop solution for small and large manufacturing enterprises and start-ups who manage multiple manufacturing projects and provide a seamless manufacturing experience, we are developing a wide network of suppliers to provide services including CNC machining, 3D printing services, sheet metal. Fabrication, injection molding and vacuum casting.

The technology used to build the production platform are node.js, react.js and frappe framework.

Main characteristics

The company is an integral part of manufacturing projects in various industries such as electric mobility, consumer health-tech, FMCG and industrials.

The platform offers special features like these.

Instant creation of “Request for Quotation (RFQ)” and status update

Customers can create RFQs on the platform and track how long it takes to receive the quote. This feature saves customers from emailing RFQs and following up with suppliers.

Feedback for Design for Manufacturing (DFM).

This feature provides complete feedback on the manufacturing status of the design, and saves the customer the trouble of making design changes during production. Users can explore the design with the unique 3D viewer.

Order management

This provides step-by-step access to order drawings, quality report, material test report, delivery and delivery schedule of each component on the dashboard.

Management of classes

A library of all classes and commands. Users can order at the click of a button.

Motivation and origin

Motwani started her career at P&G and worked in many business units solving engineering problems. It was during this period that she saw some of the challenges in the manufacturing industry in India.

“If you want to buy a custom part or product, finding the right manufacturing supplier is tedious and time-consuming. There is no easy way to know which manufacturing process, where it is produced and what the exact price is. Manufacturing is a very disorganized industry and I wanted to change that,” she says.

Today, Karkhana.io has successfully increased the number of customers and suppliers in the platform by more than five times.

“In these four years, our team has grown from four people to a team of 46 people,” she says proudly.

Development history

Karkhana.io has in-house capabilities in design and manufacturing consulting, project management and supply chain management. Also, its digital platform offers several features to customers and suppliers.

“These things give us an edge over others. As of now, we have no direct competitors,” says Motwani.

In the year In 2020, the company raised $1.5 million in a seed round led by Vertex Ventures SEA and India. Their growth stats are 150+ customers, 450+ suppliers and a team size of 46.
