Kid Cudi Discusses Fashion and ‘Future Retro Vibes’ – WWD

DEEP DIVE: Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, aka Kid Cudi, is diving deeper and deeper into fashion.

The rapper and actor sat surrounded by displays of his label Members Of The Rage’s first full fashion collection, for fall 2023, at an exhibition at Right Bank Paris on Thursday.

“I really wanted it to represent Scott Mescudin, who I am,” he said. “I think anyone who knows me will be able to look at this collection and feel my spirit throughout it.”

The artist is heavily inspired by nineties culture – grunge, hip-hop – and described himself as a “super freak”.

“So I wanted to add futuristic elements and things like that, just to give it a little spin and make it a little more fun,” he continued. “It’s almost like a retro future-type vibe.”

Hanging along one wall was a brown faux fur jacket, multi-hued floral shirts and dresses, plus camo bombers in cool egg blue, olive and grey-green.

Mescudi said the unisex collection, which follows the first T-shirt drop last year, will be sold worldwide at stores including Selfridges, Saks Fifth Avenue and H. Lorenzo. Joined in pieces: A knit, then a leather jacket idea would explode.

“For a year I was just thinking about everything I wanted to do, everything I wanted to perfect,” he said.

Mescudi would see clothes in the store and think, “If they change this color and change that, it would be bad.”

One of the first things Mescudi wanted to make was a black and red sweater, which is an exact copy of what Kurt Cobain wore. A varsity jacket with piping on the sleeves was another early creation.

“I felt like the varsity style has been around for decades and nobody’s really tried to upset it or improve it or do anything new with it all this time,” he said. “I wanted to stab him.”

Mescudi drew a design on his sketch and it turned out exactly how he wanted.

He likes to mix fabrics in unexpected ways. For example, there is a jumpsuit made of sherpa, with tulle flowing underneath.

“I always have ideas,” he continued. “If I’m in Tokyo, I’m seeing all kinds of vibrations. The fashion there is totally inspiring.

“I’m just a fan of fashion,” added Mescudi, who planned to go to Sacai’s show.

“Chitose.” [Abe] it’s a new friend of mine,” he said of the brand’s designer. “We met recently when I was in Tokyo and we really hit it off. We are actually working on something special. I can’t say exactly what it is.”

His goal is for MOTR to eventually become a lifestyle brand. Meanwhile, Mescudi remains busy in other fields. He has a role in the recently released House Party and will appear as a father in Disney Plus’ Crater.

Mescudi will start writing his memoirs next month, but one dream is to direct his own films.

“It’s up there with the creation of this line,” Mescudi said of his fashion. “Doing this has given me a load of confidence. I feel like I can do anything now. I’m really inspired.”
