An internal Oracle organizational chart shows 30 people running Oracle’s most important technical and cloud sides after the company quietly reorganized them in June.
Oracle earlier this week began layoffs that could affect thousands of employees, primarily in marketing, advertising and customer experience divisions. But Oracle Cloud Infrastructure was not affected by the layoffs, several employees told Insider. OCI is the cloud that takes on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, and is the business on which Oracle’s biggest growth prospects are pinned.
Instead, Oracle has reorganized OCI to focus on what it describes as “four pillars” — infrastructure, security and developer services, core platforms and data, and emerging services, according to an internal email seen by Insider. Matt Ryanczak, the senior executive who led the operations and support organization, left the company after being replaced by Jay Evans, Oracle’s chief information officer, another internal email showed.
But changes at the top of this section have been going on for months. In March, Don Johnson, Oracle’s cloud and AI leader, left the platform and AI-services company he founded a year ago, leaving only Oracle Cloud Infrastructure chief Clay Maguire to head the company’s cloud division. In an internal email at the time, Johnson said he would advise on the health care initiative.
It wasn’t the first time Johnson had left the OCI at the helm. In June 2020, Johnson announced that he was stepping down from direct leadership of the cloud division to pursue new projects at Oracle, tapping Magouyrk to replace him. He returned in December 2020 to launch the new cloud and artificial intelligence company, which Johnson described in an email to employees as “an extension of OCI, not a division.”
Now, an org chart shows Johnson has about 1,200 reports, including in the healthcare, engineering and artificial intelligence groups.
Magouyrk, meanwhile, now leads all of OCI’s 10,500 employees, the org chart shows. Greg Pavlik leads the largest group in OCI, with nearly 3,500 reports. Maguire recently promoted Pavlik to senior vice president of OCI in a reorganization, so he now runs an integrated OCI infrastructure and core services org.
The org chart below focuses on the people who run the technical and cloud sides of Oracle’s business, so it excludes CEO Safra Katz, who is generally thought to run the finance, sales and marketing aspects of the business. The chart shows the people reporting to chairman and chief technology officer Larry Ellison. Johnson; and Magouyrk, as shown in the company’s internal organ chart.
