Mahomes was selected for the Texas Tech Ring of Honor

Mahomes will be inducted into both the Texas Tech Hall of Fame and the Ring of Honor following a unanimous vote by the Ring of Honor Committee. He will become the eighth member of the prestigious Ring of Honor, joining such greats as Donnie Anderson (2012), EJ Holub (2012), Dave Parks (2012), Gabe Rivera (2014), Zach Thomas (2016). , Michael Crabtree (2021) and Elmer Tarbox (2021).

Mahomes was informed of his upcoming induction following the Chiefs’ second preseason game against the Washington Chiefs this afternoon. After spending three seasons as a star at quarterback from 2014-16, Mahomes led the nation in tackles his last two seasons as a Red Raider. He threw for 11,252 yards and recorded 12,097 yards of total offense in his career, both of which rank third among Tech football. He totaled 115 touchdowns in that span, 93 of which came through the air and another 22 on the ground.

Mahomes became the 12th quarterback in NCAA FBS history to pass for 5,000 yards in 12 games in 2016. He is one of only three signal callers to reach 5,000 yards of total offense twice in a career, which ultimately propelled him into the national spotlight as the 2016 Sammy Baugh Award winner.

His tenure at Texas Tech wasn’t just defined by touchdown passes and spectacular plays, but Mahomes was the best in the class, following Big 12 Scholar-Athlete honors and Academic All-America recognition during his junior season in 2016. In fact, Mahomes is one of 10 Red Raiders and the first to be named an Academic All-American during his career.

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Mahomes with the 10th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, making him the seventh Red Raider that season to hear his name called in the first round. Mahomes has since rewarded the Chiefs, leading the franchise to a pair of Super Bowls and two more AFC Championship games in his four seasons as a starter.

Mahomes was named NFL MVP and became the youngest player in history to win a Super Bowl after leading a memorable come-from-behind victory over the San Francisco 49ers to end the 2019 season. It was just the second Super Bowl title in franchise history and the Chiefs’ first since 1970 when Mahomes collected Super Bowl MVP honors after throwing for 286 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

His NFL career was marked by many memorable moments, from missed passes to left-handed throws on runs to multiple game-winning drives. In 63 games as an NFL rookie, Mahomes has already thrown for an impressive 18,991 yards and 151 touchdowns with 37 interceptions and a 66.7 completion percentage. He also rushed for 1,189 yards and eight yards on that stretch.

Mahomes threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns in his first season in 2018 alone to earn NFL MVP honors. In the process, he became the first player in college football and NFL history to throw for 5,000 or more yards in a single season. He joined Peyton Manning and Tom Brady as only the third quarterback in NFL history to total 5,000 passing yards and 50 touchdowns.

His induction into Texas Tech’s Hall of Fame will highlight an eventful weekend on campus as the Red Raiders host Bayer. Texas Tech will announce the Hall of Fame inductees at a luncheon on Oct. 28, followed by a ceremony for Holmes later that evening.
