Don’t get us wrong, former First Lady Michelle Obama’s fashion has always been on point. Since 2009, she has been going to events, giving inspirational speeches and encouraging so many people around the world – all in great style. With that said, when she left the White House in 2017, her fashion definitely took a turn.
She has started experimenting with her clothes and hair, rocking the look she couldn’t as First Lady. Speaking with Ellen Degeneres at an event in Washington DC promoting her new book The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times, Michelle discussed some big changes she made after leaving her official title.
Noting that Americans were still “adjusting” to having a black president and a black family in the White House, she said she would “keep [her] straight hair.” She then joked, “Let’s pass health care.”
Now that that time in her life is long gone, let’s take a moment to appreciate her best post-White House style moments. Some of our favorites are her book tour looks, from 2019’s Becoming to 2022’s The Light We Carry.
Time for Reinvention
Michelle took Y2K style for a spin in these Balmain distressed wide-leg jeans and a Marine Serre dress that turned into a ball for this book event in San Francisco. We love a good fashion risk!
