MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Whether you’re looking for a complete outfit or just want a statement, Mela’s Boutique in Montgomery says it’s a little bit of everything, but owner Laura Tanver says not many people come in to shop. .
“It was a little slow, I think, but that’s the way it is, it’s off and on,” Tanvir said.
The small business owner has been running her shops for 10 years. She said this festive shopping season comes with additional challenges.
“Inflation was horrendous,” Tanveer said. But actually, it’s easier to come and buy clothes than to buy groceries.
The Associated Press reported that national retail sales fell 0.6 percent from the previous month. This is a sign that inflation is affecting many families.
The Alabama Retail Association says the decline is expected and that despite these numbers, Alabamians will spend more this holiday season than last year.
“I expect most of the retailers I’ve talked to will finish the year,” said Nancy Dennis with the Alabama Retail Association. “It really depends on what they do.”
Many consumers depend on credit cards. Credit card debt has risen 15% in recent months, the AP reports. People are spending their savings.
“That may be declining, so they have to rely less on credit cards,” Dennis said.
While many consumers are looking to save, Tanveer stresses the importance of shopping local around the holidays.
“The City of Montgomery needs our local businesses to pay our sales tax,” Tanveer said.
He added that it is to contribute to bringing the capital city to a better level.
