Opus Security comes out of hiding to address cloud security threats

Opus Security, a cloud security orchestration and optimization platform, today raised $10 million in seed funding led by YL Ventures, along with Tiger Global and angel investors. CEO Manny Harr told TechCrunch that the proceeds will be used to launch the Opus platform into general availability and expand the startup’s footprint in the US and product R&D.

It’s Harr’s proof that cloud security teams rely heavily on manual processes to solve security problems, which aren’t scalable. It’s not an unbiased source, exactly. But to his point, a survey by Orca Security found that 59% of security teams receive more than 500 alerts about public cloud security every day. In a separate poll from ISACA and HCL Technologies released last May, 61% of IT security professionals said their teams are understaffed.

“Today, to fix duplicate security findings, it’s becoming necessary to include multiple teams and stakeholders across the organization in critical security processes,” Harr told TechCrunch in an email interview. “This complex collaboration—without a streamlined orchestration process—creates friction and time lags as teams fail to communicate clearly. This friction leads to a general lack of visibility into how reliable the organization is, how improvement processes are performed, and what needs to be improved.”

He co-founded Har Opus with Or Gabay, with whom he worked on the security orchestration startup Simplify. Harr was a founding member of Siemplify, which was acquired by Google earlier this year.

“We’ve seen firsthand the challenges security operations teams face when trying to analyze, prioritize and remediate security threats using complex, fragmented processes and disparate inspection tools — without oversight and governance,” Harr said. “Opus’ vision is to empower security operations teams to look beyond alerts and threats and gain the knowledge, skills and control to dramatically reduce the time to address them.”

To this end, Opus draws operational and technical information from existing cloud security tools to create “connective tissue” between security operations teams and other organizational units. Attempts to integrate the feedback and improvement process with guidelines and playbooks, allowing automation to solve issues that normally don’t require human involvement – and providing key metrics along the way.

“Organizations today may choose to use a traditional ticketing platform such as ServiceNow or Jira, and add ‘backend’ security automation platforms that manually automate processes to support security operations and DevOps functions. Generic ticketing platforms can help with management but do little in terms of automation efficiency. ” said Harr. “With instant visibility and recovery mapping… Opus eliminates blind spots and provides security and business executives with quick and realistic insights into their risk situation.”

That’s a lot to promise — especially in the face of competition from cloud security startups Wiz, Paladin Cloud, and Laminar. But in an encouraging sign (potentially), Har opus has seen early adoption. Overall, Opus plans to expand its headcount from 10 employees to 20 to 25 by the end of the year, Harr said.

“As organizations continue to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, and with shrinking budgets and workforces rocking the industry, Opus is a solution designed to take these external impacts into account,” Harr said. “Implementing the Opus solution is easy, and as Opus drives automation throughout the improvement process, it’s perfect for organizations trying to do more with less.”

Like many other startups, Opus is benefiting from VC dollars that, despite the macroeconomic downturn, have not stopped flowing into the cybersecurity sector. According to Momentum Cyber’s latest cybersecurity market review, investors poured $11.5 billion of total venture capital funding into cybersecurity startups in the first half of 2021, up from $4.7 billion in the same period a year earlier.

John Brennan, senior partner at YL Ventures, added in an emailed statement: “The proliferation of cloud-based security solutions has dramatically increased organizational awareness of the scope of their vulnerability. While visibility in the cloud has greatly improved, customers now state that they need a different solution to address the exponentially increasing number of alerts.
A tuning orchestration and automation platform.
