The second installment of The Peacock Show, “Baking,” not only has a new co-host for Maya Rudolph, but a whole new cast of talented and highly motivated contestants looking to win $50,000 to impress a strict grandma judging panel.
This was the first time Emmy winners Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph hosted a show together.
The first episode of the second season was a holiday special featuring several celebrities, such as Fred Armisen and Kristen Bell, who held a “baker” event for charity.
In the second episode, viewers were introduced to the couples competing in this “baking” season. Some of the season’s standout moments come from a couple from Queens, New York, George and Agnes Molina.
Their love for each other was palpable, and made for some of the show’s most touching moments. Even Rudolph felt the emotion and told George, “Don’t cry at my show!” it has.
The pair made it to the fourth episode before being voted out by the judges for their take on Ham and Mozzarella Mofongo. Their journey on the show was amazing, especially considering they are bakers from their non-traditional ways.
Agnes “Aggie” Molina started dipping into chocolate treats like pretzels and cake pops when her first child was born eight years ago.
She was looking for a way to make extra money for her family and when the pandemic hit, her husband George lost his job as a car salesman, so this extra income became more important than ever.
George suggested that Aggie start baking and selling cakes.
“I was by no means ignorant of making cakes. I don’t even know how to put together a cake,” Aggie said.
Aggie said she started watching YouTube videos online and found success on her first try when she decided to bake a cake. Soon she started selling these cakes to the public to support her family.
In the first episode, Amy Poehler tells them that “baking brings your family together.”
The couple was flown to Los Angeles for ten days and stayed in a hotel with the other contestants.
“We have a group message. It’s called Prison Break because we’re stuck in the hotel and can’t get out. … We’ve definitely become a family, hanging out with all the actors,” George said.
The Molinas have five children and said it was hard to be away from them for so long, but worth it.
“They were so excited… I filmed all my kids in the living room watching us on TV. They were jumping for joy,” Aggie said.
As her business grew, George said he was her biggest supporter but also her biggest critic.
“I was honest with her … making a cake is not something that bakers want to hear,” George said.
He said his aim was to help his wife spend at a restaurant. The couple said their dream is to open a bakery in the future.
“With all the kids and everything, I think we have more than enough hands to run the store,” George said.
Aggie says she wants to open this bakery shop for her children and pass the family business on to them in the future.
