Mathieu Ricciello is set to lead the heats of the Vuelta a Burgos from Haagens Berman Action.

The Arizona climbing ace has been tapped to ride as a trainee for Israel’s Premier Tech for the rest of this season, it was confirmed on Friday.

“We’ve had our eyes on Matthew Ricciello for a while and have followed his progress at the U23 level, so we’re excited to join the IPT as a stagiaire,” said Ric Verbrugge, manager of Israel Premier Tech Sports. He is still young at 20 years old. Matthew is optimistic about the future.

The Burgos race early next month puts the Hagen Berman stock graduate in direct battle with World Tour stars such as Joao Almeida, Alejandro Valverde and Giro d’Italia winner Jay Hindley.

“I am very excited to compete with Israel-Premier Tech as a stagiaire. “It’s a great opportunity to get more race experience, especially with the World Tour guys, as I’ve been following a lot of them in my development of the sport,” Ricciello said.

“I’m looking forward to soaking it all in and learning as much as I can from the experienced guys.”

Riccitello is the latest rider out of the Hagens Berman Axeon talent factory delivery.

The Axel Merckx crew has delivered riders such as Almeida, Tao Geoghan Hart and Joe Dombrowski at the top level of cycling.

Eighteen months on the US development team gave Rizzitello an overall victory at the 2.2 Istarsko Projekt-Istrian Spring Cup in March and a fourth-place finish at this summer’s US Pro Nationals TT.

“Looking to the future, I see myself focusing on podiums as a GC rider so I’m grateful to the IPT for giving me the opportunity to compete in Burgos and further my development,” said Riccitello.
