Welgemeend August Art Month is an annual event that aims to promote the appreciation of art and culture in the greater Cape Town community.

The event is hosted by collectors Frank and Lisle Kilburn and auction house Strauss & Co in association with the Friends of Welgemund. The month-long celebration of the visual arts is hosted at the historic Wolgemund Mansion and includes an art exhibition featuring works from private collections. The convivial program features walks, lectures and other social events.
This year’s exhibition is titled Honors: Acknowledge/Explore And the Cape Town Art Gallery, established in 1971 by art market pioneer Louis Schacht and his wife Charlotte, pays homage to the founders of De Kunskamer.

Lewis
Through De Kunskamer, Louis and Charlotte created a platform to market and sell the works of the best South African artists of their time. They also considered it their duty to make artists aware of their beauty and elegance to the public. Many of these artists became famous and are known to be among the top artists our country has produced today.
In the year August 2022 Art Month pays tribute to De Kunskamer, the late Louis Schacht and Charlotte Schacht, as well as the artists and artworks (many now famous) that have passed through De Kunskamer’s hands over the years.

Lewis, or “Um Lewis” as he is affectionately known, always emphasized that the decision to purchase any work of art should be based on the buyer’s love for a particular painting or sculpture, not on its investment value.
Works include Irma Stern, JH Pierneuf, Alexis Preller, Deborah Poynton, Kenneth Baker and many others.
Welgemeend Art Month 2022 opens on August 5 and closes on August 31.
