This week’s episode of “Saturday Night Live” opened with one of the most prominent moments in news to date: the House Select Committee’s investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, riots.
Kenan Thompson, played by Representative Benny Thompson, opened the NBC variety show by introducing the crowd to the committee’s ninth and final hearing.
“January 6th was one of the most dramatic and consequential moments in our nation’s history,” says Thompson’s Benny Thompson, “so we assembled a group of monotonous nerds and made a PowerPoint to fight back.”
He went on to say that the committee has been looking into the attack for more than a year, but this session will be “a little different”.
“We’ll summarize our findings and make a story-telling pitch, and then we’ll all just grab a bite,” said Thompson’s Benny Thompson, bringing in the pastries.
After this introduction, Rep. Liz Cheney, played by Heidi Gardner, took the stage.
“Over the past few months, this bipartisan committee has made our case to all Americans,” she said. “Whether you’re a staunch Republican or a nodding Democrat, there’s one person to blame for this rebellion: Donald Trump. And one person affects the result: me.
Gardner Cheney says that the audience may be wondering what makes her so strong, and she asks the audience, “Who’s your daddy? Is it Dick Cheney?”
“So yeah, I guess you could say I have big Dick Cheney energy,” she said.
The committee examined some of the evidence, including a video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, played by Chloé Fineman, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, played by Sarah Sherman.
“Hello, DoorDash? It’s Chuck Schumer,” Sherman’s Schumer said in a phone call from Bunker. “Yes, we still haven’t received our lunch order. And I changed the place where we were thrown because of the unsatisfying betrayal, but he had to get there now.
The committee then presented evidence that then-President Donald Trump had asked multiple people, including a White House janitor, about his election loss.
Trump asked a dog who “scooted his dead body from side to side.”
“Donald was desperate to stay in office,” said Representative Adam Kinzinger, played by Andrew Dismukes. “There were true heroes like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer who ran this country right.
Then immediately Sherman Schumer and Fineman Pelosi spoke to Vice President Mike Pence.
Let me tell you, “If Trump comes here now, I’m going to punch him in the face,” Feynman’s Pelosi said. “I will go to prison, but I will be happy.”
Thompson’s Benny Thompson asked Gardner Cheney for any final thoughts.
“The reality is that Trump was planning to declare victory regardless of the outcome,” she said. Check out this video of the president the day before the election.
The video shows James Austin Johnson telling Trump on the phone that “the votes don’t matter.”
“What’s even a sound?” he said.
The committee voted to subpoena Trump. They all voted yes and thought he would indeed come.
“Well, I can already see that this is absolutely zero,” said Thompson’s Benny Thompson. “I want to thank my colleagues for giving up their summers and in some cases their careers to serve on this committee.”
He went on to add that it was “a country that was fun while it lasted.”
After that, he launched into the show’s signature catchphrase, “Live… from New York! It’s Saturday night! ”
