#Startup Story: Pulse Communication


Pulse Communications is run by the dynamic duo of Samantha Thomas and Kirsten Rows, and we learned more about the small, dynamic team, focused on strategic direction and execution across public relations, influencer engagement, content creation and stakeholder engagement.

Can you tell us a little more about Pulse Communications?

Born from a passion for purpose-driven communications, Pulse Communications aims to empower brands through impactful storytelling, meaningful communication and an expert understanding of the media landscape and is run by two partners, Kirsten Roos and Samantha Thomas.

Specializing in public relations, influencer engagement, campaign management and execution, content creation and creative concepts; Pulse Communications understands and has the experience that communication needs are unique to each business, providing strategic communication services that drive internal and external messaging to support brand objectives.

All the work done by Pulse Communications is done with purpose and honesty, with the aim of achieving effective and high-quality results.

When, how and why did you start?

The business started in In the midst of the 2020 pandemic, it was originally intended to serve small businesses struggling financially in the wake of the economic crisis. While Pulse Communications still caters to small businesses, at competitive prices, the business has evolved and grown to work with larger institutions – something we’re very proud of.

What is the main function of Pulse Communications?

We’re firm believers in accepting and owning your strengths – and we won’t accept work that doesn’t believe you can make an impact. With that said, our passion and skills are in public relations, content creation, influencer relations, partnerships and creative concept management and execution, thanks to years of agency experience.

Can you name some of your clients?

We provide white label services to large agencies across the country and have had the opportunity to work on some exciting international and local brands, although we can’t say who. In our time, we have worked on brands like local furniture manufacturer, Balconybar. He provided publicity for Tony McPherson, a youth activist and philanthropist. and conceptualizing, managing and executing across various beauty conglomerates, ARC Stores, brands such as Huda Beauty, Kayali and Wishful Skin.

What are some of the obstacles you’ve faced since you started?

Starting, building and running a business is not for the faint of heart – we have faced many obstacles that we have recognized as learning opportunities to support us in our growth. The biggest obstacle to – or reality – being a business owner is the unknown, especially financial forecasting and capacity planning. We have worked hard and fast to ensure that we have the right professionals on our team.

Did you receive any funding to get Pulse Communications up and running? If so, what was the process like?

Pulse Communications is completely self-sustaining – something we are extremely proud of. In our first two months of operation, we were “lucky” to land a major account, which provided us with the capital to grow the business and what we call the strong relationships we’ve built in the industry. The last decade.

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?

Courage. The discomfort you feel in your gut is what drives you to do better, think bigger and take chances – don’t ignore it.

As an entrepreneur, what would you like to see change in the South African landscape?

As the entrepreneurs behind Small Business, we want to see more opportunities for small businesses to compete for business with larger corporations. The data shows that 25% of new businesses make it to 15 years or more, and up to 45% fail within the first five years. There are many characteristics for this – such as management issues in the company, business processes and requirements of potential customers, outdated thinking – can hinder growth and the possibility of success.

Where do you want to see Pulse Communications in the next five years?

Our motto, since the beginning of the business, has been “growing” – and will continue to be. We are looking to grow the business, provide career opportunities and continue to work with our beloved clients over the next few years.
